“We do not need more material development, we need more spiritual development, we do not need more intellectual power, we need more moral power. We do not need more knowledge, we need more character. We do not need more government, we need more culture. We do not need more laws, we need more religion. We do not need more of the things that are seen, we need more of the things that are unseen.” - Cal Coolidge

If you grew up in Dallas, this one is going to stop you cold. Baby Doe’s Matchless Mine. Sitting on the highest point in Dallas — right on Harry Hines behind that famous waterfall billboard — overlooking I-35 and downtown. You walked through an entrance built like a real mineshaft, past rusting mining equipment and narrow gauge rail cars, into a dimly lit dining room that felt like you’d descended into the earth. It was unlike anything else in Texas. From 1976 until it closed in 2005, generations of Dallas families celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, prom nights, and special occasions in that old mine on Goat Hill. Then it was demolished. And just like that — it was gone. Some places you don’t realize you’ll miss until they’re already gone. 🤠🪨

"You Can Do Magic" was written and produced by British songwriter Russ Ballard (ex-Argent, who also wrote hits for Rainbow, Ace Frehley and Frida). America (which was already only the duo Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell after the departure of Dan Peek) had been without a blockbuster track since 1976. Russ composed the track especially for them, played almost all the instruments (except the drums) and created that "do do" of the chorus thinking about the perfect vocal harmonies of the two. It became the band's biggest hit of the 80s, #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marked their comeback.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of #BroncosROF quarterback Craig Morton, who died on Saturday at the age of 83. Morton quarterbacked the Broncos from 1977-82 and led the team to its first playoff appearance and Super Bowl berth (XII vs. Dallas) in the 1977 season. 📰 » buff.ly/GMXiLgG

What indicators signal to you that a city is well-run? That its elected leaders and staff are doing a great job, I want to know what signals a quality City government to you. My goal is to compare what matters to people to what our cities prioritize.

Case in point is the recent “Pratt Summer” ad. It’s not just the dialogue. For anyone who lives in LA, or has lived there, you know that each of the backgrounds, Hollywood Blvd, the parks, the piers, etc., now show the telltale signs of civilizational decay (homelessness, trash, graffiti). There is nothing but “broken windows.” To show what those places would look like clean and free of tents, trash, crime, etc., with normies happily walking around, smiling, playing, living their best lives, is a shock to the subconscious. It’s so effective because it shows what we’ve grown accustomed to and makes you realize it’s unsustainable.

Win or lose, the Spencer Pratt campaign is a preview of what you’d see against Gavin Newsom if he’s the Democratic nominee for president. California is a tough record to run on.

The “Tears in Rain” scene in Blade Runner (1982) was not fully scripted. Rutger Hauer felt the original speech was too long and “opera-like,” so he rewrote it before filming and added the immortal line: “like tears in rain.” It is remembered as one of cinema’s most moving farewells to death, where a replicant reveals profound humanity. Thanks to Hauer’s improvisation, the moment became a defining symbol of Blade Runner and the cyberpunk genre, standing today as an immortal piece of film history.
