@rryssf "The lawyer had no reliable way to detect the fraud." What are you talking about? Try reading the cases you cite!

Here's what made it catastrophic: The hallucinated cases looked PERFECT: ✓ Proper legal citation format ✓ Realistic judicial reasoning ✓ Specific page numbers (F.3d reporters) ✓ Plausible holdings ✓ Judge names and dates ChatGPT even generated fake excerpts when asked to verify. The lawyer had no reliable way to detect the fraud.

🚨 A lawyer cited 6 fake cases from ChatGPT. Got sanctioned, fined, career damaged. Now courts require "AI disclosure" but NOT AI verification. You're liable for hallucinations you can't reliably detect. Here's the legal crisis nobody's prepared for:

@LeeHepner @MattBruenig @matthewstoller I'm curious how you all view college and university tuition-pricing. Very granular, not very transparent, but based on information provided by the consumer, not surveillance

@MattBruenig @matthewstoller The difference is publicly advertised discounts applied consistently to eligible consumers (e.g. senior, veteran, student discounts, matinee movies) vs. charging individual consumers or granular consumer segments different prices based on predictive modeling of willingness to pay

who came up with the idea of rebranding price discrimination as "surveillance pricing"?

I look forward to the day when there is a separate DSM disorder for every man, woman, and child on earth. The DSM will expand indefinitely with each new birth. All other works will be re-cast as annexes to the DSM. The DSM of Babel.

@ProfGrewal @jbarro I suspect the PhDs would not react well if the Juris Doctors latched onto that idea

@jbarro It’s utterly absurd … One might literally be a “doctor,” but in the US the phrase is associated with medical doctors or rocket scientists … it’s a cheap form of stolen valor

One of my daughters is taking an English lit class at the local community college and I'm reading the usual classics that are in those sort of classes with her, some things I've not read in over 40 years, and I "get them" so much more now, which fits my view that the best time get a humanities degree is not when you're 20, but when you are 60

I don't know what was in Edward Snowden's heart. I do know my government was engaging in mass, warrantless, unlawful surveillance of my communications, and *I am glad I know,* and I only know because of Snowden. The people who violated my Fourth Amendment rights betrayed me.

Jimmy Carter working towards peaceful conflict resolution all over the world post-presidency -- rather than just going to make money via corny entertainment deals or paid speeches from special interests -- made him the last true American statesman in that respect.

@ProfGrewal I just mean: people's anger toward the health insurance industry is not necessarily based on a misunderstanding of how insurance works, though some of it probably is.

So now murder is justified because health insurance companies don’t cover things they’re not obligated to? And doesn’t this come under life insurance rubric, not health insurance?
