The situation involved a supply cap bypass in the market, which allowed an unusually large position to be created. However, that oversized position did not remain unchecked — it was ultimately liquidated by the protocol itself, showing that the risk mechanisms were still functioning. It’s also crucial to highlight that the event was isolated to that specific market. The rest of continues to operate normally. Venus Protocol hit by THE token price manipulation attack An attacker manipulated the price of Thena’s low-liquidity THE token on Venus Protocol, borrowing millions against inflated collateral before being liquidated. The exploit left the BNB Chain lending platform with about $2.15M in bad debt after a donation-based attack bypassed supply limits, with the initial funds traced to Tornado Cash.

There seems to be some misinformation circulating. First, this was not a flash loan attack. Flash loans on Venus are limited to liquidity available in the protocol, and the on-chain activity does not indicate a flash loan exploit. What actually happened is that an address had accumulated a large amount of $THE over time and used it as collateral to borrow other assets. When market conditions changed, the position became eligible for liquidation. It’s also important to highlight that Venus generated significant liquidation fee revenue during the process, which helps offset part of the potential losses. Because of this, the net impact is much smaller than what some posts suggest, and the situation remains contained and manageable within the protocol.

How it happened: • Attacker received 7,400 $ETH via @TornadoCash • Deposited $ETH on @aave and borrowed ~$9.9M in stablecoins • Used funds to buy and pump $THE on exchanges • Deposited 36.1M $THE on Venus as collateral • Borrowed $BNB, $CAKE, and $BTC (~$5.07M) • Then dumped $THE, triggering liquidations Resulting $2.18M in bad debt left on Venus, per lookonchain.

A lot of numbers being shared right now lack full context. Venus generated substantial liquidation fee revenue during the process, which offsets part of the potential losses. This significantly reduces the net impact — meaning the situation is contained and far more manageable than some posts suggest.

🚨 @VenusProtocol on BSC was exploited for ~$3.7M on March 15. Root cause: supply cap bypass via direct ERC-20 transfers to a vToken contract, a known Compound V2 design flaw previously flagged in Venus’s own Code4rena audit.
