⭐️New Paper⭐️on contrasting textures and cooling timescales recorded in main group pallasites: doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl…. We find a simple model of a metal intrusion in the parent body quantitatively matches the observations. Work led by the brilliant Maeve Murphy Quinlan :)

@standupmaths I'm sure you'll find it, but the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service is the holder of the data and has some discussion of the underlying science iers.org/IERS/EN/Home/h…

@jimalkhalili Looks like the original has been deleted! I’ve put it on my list of things to look up the data for when I eventually have free time.

And I thought days were going by more quickly as I got older. Turns out it’s days that are getting shorter! 🤔 Currently averaging 2ms less than 24hrs. In long term, Earth’s rotation should be slowing down due to moon’s gravity.
Massimo@Rainmaker1973

Fun fact: in the 50 years we have been recording the Earth's rotation to the ten-thousandth of a second, only a single day in 2008 was actually 24 hours long [source, u/rtphokieO: buff.ly/3Qcp0C4]

@jimalkhalili Some atoms within us should be relatively young decay products like 14N from 14C? But only a tiny fraction, I guess.

Yeah, Joni wasn't quite right. The atoms we're made of have to be more than five billion years old (before solar system was formed). And all the hydrogen atoms are 13 billion years old. But I guess that wouldn't scan in the song.

@sciquotes @jimalkhalili We are stardust Billion year old carbon as Joni Mitchell said in 1969 when writing a song about a festival she wasn't at.
