The retreat of the Mer de Glace is deeply alarming. My hikes in the Alps showed me how real and rapid this loss is. Natural cycles alone do not explain this.

I’ve tracked weather personally for decades, and for most of that time the July 1936 record looked untouchable. For the rest of the 20th century, not a single July since 1936 had finished within even 1°F of it across the contiguous United States.
If July 2026 surpasses it, the significance may be downplayed. It shouldn’t be. This was one of the great benchmark records in U.S. climate history.
