It is not a good sign that the White House social media team is, instead of selling the President’s plan, bullying and cussing at anyone questioning the plan. It is an even worse sign that the Obama team likes the plan.

In Chapter 10 of my memoir, THE EDUCATION OF A SENATOR: FROM JFK TO TRUMP, I tell about watching President Lyndon B. Johnson disappear into the back room Capitol office of Republican Minority Leader Sen. Everett M. Dirksen while they wrote the Civil Rights Bill of 1968. This taught me a lesson about the “reasoning together,” as LBJ called it, that it usually takes to pass an important law. LBJ had told his vice president, Hubert H. Humphrey, “The bill can’t pass unless you get Ev Dirksen. You and I are going to get Ev. He’s got to look good all the time.” Johnson was not the only president who practiced “reasoning together." On the Nixon staff, I wrote memos for the president’s bipartisan meetings with congressional leaders. Democratic House Speaker Tip O’ Neill called Ronald Reagan the “worst president,” but they worked together. So did Sen. Trent Lott and President Bill Clinton, even while Lott was trying to convict Clinton in an impeachment trial. These lessons served me well as governor when I had to work with a Democratic legislature. In the Senate, it took a while for me to be able to work with President Obama. In his first six years, Obama achieved few bipartisan results. But later we worked together to lower student loan interest rates and on education and medical innovation laws that Obama called “Christmas miracles,” and the Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell called them the most important laws of that session of Congress. In THE EDUCATION OF A SENATOR: FROM JFK TO TRUMP, I paint portraits of the presidents I worked with, tell stories about what I saw behind the scenes, and recount the lessons I learned about American politics and our country’s future. THE EDUCATION OF A SENATOR: FROM JFK TO TRUMP is out now from @PostHillPress. You can order here: simonandschuster.com/books/The-Educ…

If Democrats win all districts up to Trump +9 under the new maps: Dems 222 GOP 213 Under the old maps Dems 239 GOP 196 A 17 seat gap. That's the story of redistricting in a nutshell.

So there are certain intersections where I wish we had a cop to punish bad drivers. One of those in DC is at 15th and Constitution and cars that use a left turn only lane to cut off drivers patiently waiting and following the law. There’s no rage like road rage!

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D.
People are concerned about paying their mortgage or rent, affording groceries and paying for gas, not about putting together a $1.8 billion fund for the President and his allies to pay whomever they wish with no legal precedent or accountability. This is adding to our national debt. If there needs to be a settlement, the administration should bring it to Congress to decide.

Trump’s endorsement of Paxton should put to rest the fantasy Trump cares about the GOP as a whole. What he cares more about is building a party that’s loyal to him, not building or sustaining a party that can win. There’s a HUGE difference which is why he regularly endorses the more flawed candidate as they’ll always be more loyal.
