At the recent National Academy of Inventors (NAI) induction, one truth stood out clearly: So many of the honorees were immigrants. These are scientists and engineers who came to the United States with ideas, ambition, and a desire to contribute. They built labs, trained the next generation, and created technologies that are now part of the backbone of American innovation. This is not an accident. The U.S. has long been a magnet for global talent—not just because of its resources, but because it promised freedom to explore, freedom to collaborate, and a system that judged you by your work, not by where you were born. Yet now, we’re seeing a dangerous shift. Scientists are being quietly blacklisted, excluded from funding or opportunities—not based on any wrongdoing, but because they had students from certain countries. Or past affiliations that were completely legal, encouraged, and even celebrated just a few years ago. This echoes a darker time in U.S. history—McCarthyism, where guilt by association replaced fairness and due process. We cannot afford to go down that path again. Not morally. Not scientifically. Not economically. Innovation thrives in open environments. It withers under fear and suspicion. If we start canceling scientists for their global collaborations—rather than judging the actual merit of their work—we don’t just lose talent. We lose the future. Let’s be clear: 🧬 Immigrants fuel discovery. 🔬 Global science drives progress. 🗽 And freedom to think, teach, and explore is what made American innovation the envy of the world. We need to fight for that freedom now—before we lose it.

Another medical milestone! The first patient treated with a prime edited therapeutic shows positive clinical outcomes consistent with effective rescue of his chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a debilitating and life-shortening primary immunodeficiency. At least 19 base editing and prime editing clinical trials have begun, with at least 7 trials reporting clinical outcomes (highlighted in green in the table below). They treat a wide range of diseases both in vivo and ex vivo. And while the U.S. support for science is now in crisis, that there are more base editing and prime editing clinical trials serving patients outside of the U.S. (13) than within the U.S. (9), despite the fact that these technologies were developed in our lab in the U.S. investors.primemedicine.com/news-releases/…

I am very proud to be part of the amazing team of researchers, scientists and clinicians who are all co-authors of the important research publication just released in Nature Medicine. The paper documents changes in my brain tumour & blood before and after I received neoadjuvant systemic combination immunotherapy treatment, which occurred in 2023. Everyone involved, including lead authors Georgina Long and Helen Rizos, used their expertise, knowledge and creative intellect to generate this important data just released. Whilst the paper deals with the data from just one patient (me), ultimately a clinical trial of a large group of patients needs to be conducted to determine whether or not neoadjuvant (pretreatment) combination immunotherapy is clinically effective in (a subgroup of) brain cancer patients. I hope such a trial begins in the not too distant future. Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this research. What a fantastic achievement! But this is only the beginning & much more research is required to improve treatment and outcomes and ultimately save lives. @SydneyLHD @NthSydHealth @Sydney_Uni @COBLH #glioblastoma
