✨New Blog Post: A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats: Why the Grants Precision ISR Project Matters to New Mexico Operators New Mexico is known as the 7th largest uranium-producing district in the world. At its peak, the state produced roughly 40% of all uranium in the United States and still, without further exploration, has the largest resources in the country – approximately 400 million pounds. The U.S. nuclear renaissance needs New Mexico: energy independence in the 1980s was driven in large part by the strength of these New Mexico resources. @Verdera_Energy is a uranium extraction-focused company operating in New Mexico. Verdera holds the largest uranium mineral rights position in the state, spanning approximately 400 square miles representing about 88 million pounds of known and historic uranium resources. This equates to roughly 22% of the estimated 400 million pounds in New Mexico, primarily concentrated in the Grants District, the largest uranium district in the United States. Our focus is exclusively on In-Situ Recovery (ISR), a well-field technology used to extract uranium from sandstone-hosted deposits, often within previously impacted or contaminated aquifers. We also have the largest proprietary uranium database in New Mexico. Unlike Canada, where data is public, in the U.S. the data is not public. We have built a database which includes the Uranium Resource Inc. and Kerr-McGee databases plus many more – physically it occupies two offices and contains over 150,000 drill logs. This becomes very instrumental, as we now have much of the historical data which represents a significant value opportunity for Verdera in a region we believe is critical to the domestic uranium and nuclear renaissance in the United States. There is however, one other project in New Mexico, that I want to highlight, one that I believe the market should be paying close attention to: the Grants Precision ISR Project. General Atomics, through their affiliate, Rio Grande Resources Corporation, entered the uranium space in New Mexico in 1991 with the purchase of the Mount Taylor uranium mine in the Grants District, a resource of approximately 260 million pounds. After years of restoration and reclamation work, they are now advancing the Grants Precision ISR Project with a goal of producing over six million pounds of uranium a year. They are already about a year and a half into that process. In case anyone has questions about the capability of this group to deliver on what might seem like lofty numbers, they have already done it. The Beverly Uranium Mine, operated by Heathgate Resources (a sister company), is Australia’s longest-running in-situ recovery uranium mine and has been operating for over 25 years in remote South Australia, producing 4 to 5 million pounds of uranium per year. The operation supports over 350 employees and contractors and is part of a group of companies that contributed $10.7 billion to the South Australian economy in 2021–22. Australia is one of the world’s largest uranium producers, and ISR is a proven, well-established extraction method there, with multiple operations demonstrating consistent, long-term production. So why would the CEO of Verdera Energy spend time talking about another company’s project? Because I know the importance of everyone rowing in the same direction as we advance projects. The Grants project is important in New Mexico right now and is the largest and arguably one of the most important in the United States. And yet, most people are not talking about it because its in a private company. The work of General Atomics Uranium Resources division cannot be understated. We’ve been working together almost two years with the belief that working together on community engagement is beneficial to all. We formed a trade association called the Clean Energy Association of New Mexico @Cleanenergy_NM to educate and provide necessary information about in-situ recovery of uranium and the opportunities in New Mexico. The Grants project is a project and a team worth watching; they are breaking trail for others, engaging with regulators early, working in the community and are well resourced to take this on. They bring significant capacity, technical expertise, and a proven ability to operate successfully, supported by a strong technical team. My team and I are honored to work with them through CLEAN. Verdera’s projects will advance and we take the view that when the tide comes in, all boats rise. To that end, we are committed to a cooperative approach with like-minded companies; working together to advance the industry and help each other succeed. Together, the Verdera and Grants projects, represent approximately 85% of the known and historic uranium resources in New Mexico, our interests are very aligned. New Mexico is vital to the U.S. Nuclear Renaissance, so It’s important that we have collaboration in the industry. Success breeds success and will ultimately open the door for capital investments and more project development done right – protecting the land, air, water and people. This is why, Verdera Energy along with Grants Energy are proud founders of the Clean Energy Association of New Mexico and sponsors of the inaugural Nuclear in New Mexico Conference, April 20-22 at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa on the Santa Ana Pueblo. We invite you to join industry professionals, government officials, regulators, tribal representatives, companies, community members and academic institutions who will come together for an in-depth look at the evolving role of nuclear energy in the Southwest and the opportunities it presents for New Mexico’s future.
