@Swimmingsolo1 @RMcGreevy1301 I think his point wasn't so much focused on NGOs (though he did mention ones such as An Taisce, which regularly objects to infrastructure and housing), but rather governmental agencies with statutory powers in certain areas (taken away from central govt / leading to no progress)

@RMcGreevy1301 A lot of good points, but I don't like the blanket accusation against NGOs. Many exist to fill gaps in service not provided by the State. I'm also uncomfortable with another "tech bro" deriding local democracy and concerns. Which NGO would he like cancelled?

This by John Collison should be required reading. He eviscerates the timidity of politicians in dealing with our infrastructure problems and also the state agencies, quangos and NGOs which now exist to stymie development and not to assist them. irishtimes.com/life-style/peo…

The Russian Orenburg Region experienced a drone attack. Air raid alarm was triggered in the regional capital and air defense has been active. In Russian chats speculation ran wild regarding the origin of the drones.

@fitzr1122 @michaelbd Isnt it pretty much all just that the dollar is expensive so products made in the US are less competitive for consumers who don't earn in USD?

@Keyes Arguably, all that shows is the corporate concentration and take over of markets of a handful of gigantic multi-jurisdictional groups. Is that a good thing?

@AnMailleach Not really. Capital acquisitions tax covers both (living) gifts and bequests and it is more limiting if you can't utilise the higher categories because of your family structure.

@fitzr1122 Presumably, if a greater proportion of a population go to third level over time, that risks the average quality of students declining. In particular, it's true of Ireland where a very large proportion go but a few write well and they concentrate in a few disciplines.

Joe Biden was a friend of Ireland at a sentimental level, but what did this translate into at a practical level? For example, (along with the EU), he forced us to agree to raise our corporate tax level.

@mattyglesias I dunno, I feel like commenting on relatively-obscure Irish referenda focused on culture-war issues doesn't have alot to do with US politics and indicates a wider fall into ideology.

I know people disagree with me about this, but do we really think Elon Musk is "gullible" as opposed to deliberately doing anti-Biden propaganda because he wants Trump to win so he'll get anti-union regulators and tax cuts?

@higginsdavidw The banks were pocketing free money from the ECB because there's so little competition left in the banking market. The lending rates went up a whole lot quicker than the deposit rates.

The Irish banks never fully passed through higher ECB rates on their mortgage products. If only small interest rate cuts come along, the banks may just keep their offerings unchanged. Perhaps a similar dynamic to electricity and gas providers this year.
