The timeline is the argument. CBS announced Colbert's Late Show was ending - "purely a financial decision." The announcement came while Paramount was trying to get Trump's FCC to approve its merger with Skydance. The merger was approved. Colbert, a consistent Trump critic, is off the air in days. Letterman told the Times CBS is lying. His explanation: the people selling the network included Colbert's show in the deal as a concession to ease the merger through. This is the same playbook the FCC is currently running against ABC - ordering a license review the day after Trump called for Kimmel's firing. The pattern: want regulatory approval from Trump's FCC? Get rid of the critic. Don't want to? Risk the license review. The chilling effect does not require a direct order. The network calculates what the president wants and makes the programming decision before being asked. Letterman also said he would be surprised if late-night lasts more than a year. He was not talking about streaming trends. He was talking about "lying weasels" and what a president with FCC leverage does to programming that annoys him.
