It's release day for the 2023 @uscensusbureau 1-year American Community Survey data! tidycensus users in #rstats users can get the data *right now* with the arguments `survey = "acs1"` and `year = 2023`; it *just works*, there is nothing new to install! walker-data.com/tidycensus

Just received the final proofs of my forthcoming article on desegregation and racial attitudes/politics. Timing is incredible, with the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board decision happening this week! Find it as a pre-print here: direct.mit.edu/edfp/article/d…

I’m looking forward to using this as a teaching resource for undergrad RAs, and as a text for teaching spatial methods to an interdisciplinary audience. Perfect timing for summer projects 🙏

Mike Hixenbaugh is mikehixenbaugh.com on BlueSky
For the next half-century, that word—“ protection”—would define the governing philosophy of Southlake and suburban communities like it across America. Years later, it would be enshrined in the Carroll school district’s official motto: “Protect the Tradition.”

Our article on racial coalitions is published with page numbers (and open access). We improved existing MRP models to estimate voteshares by race and by district (/thread) and thanks to @dailykos for the perfect cartograms

Introducing a study of racial voting patterns in every US congressional district, @shirokuriwaki, Stephen Ansolabehere, @psjello, and Soichiro Yamauchi find that national-level differences significantly impact district-level voting patterns. #APSRNewIssue ow.ly/EkBS50RpsWe"

I've used Quarto/LaTeX to write my last couple of solo papers but those were short and light. Doing a longer one and dang it's nice.

Day 29 of #30DayMapChallenge is Population, so naturally I'll turn to tidycensus and #rstats for the data! This map shows population change (%) by county between 2021 and 2022, with data taken from the @uscensusbureau Population Estimates This data isn't on the Census API any longer, but you can still get it with tidycensus! To reproduce for yourselves, check out the code here: github.com/walkerke/map-c… One day left of the challenge!

Understanding change in gun sales over time informs how we think about what’s happened today, and too many times in our recent history. My heart goes out to those affected by today’s tragedy 💔

New source of data informing historical gun sales at the state level from my colleague @kang_megan! It’s the best thing researchers have on this hard-to-track measure. Cleaning + publishing this data is a huge lift! Check out the data and methods👇
