I cannot ignore what has happened this evening onboard LNERs 1Y90 from Doncaster to London My thoughts are with the victims, my colleagues involved in the incident within LNER and the emergency services dealing with this very serious incident 💙

@vanrob Control can authorise holds if we know about it but the TM or somebody must request it and have it formally agreed. A common one at Doncaster is the 11:59 XC onto the 12:04 GC to KGX.

@CjTrains Safety first. Gone are the days when you could open the door and hop on a slowly departing train. My blood runs cold when I think about it now. Genuine question. Do they still hold connections if the ‘feeder’ train is late? Or am I showing my age!

Me - Dispatches the 16:05 train at 16:04:20 Doors closed at 16:04:30 Passengers running around the corner shouting - “that just left early!!” “It’s the 16:05 not 16:04” Me - Train Doors close at least 60 seconds before departure 👀 Passengers “you jobsworth…”

@CjTrains @JBTEvans Yesterday was on a train to Basingstoke and it left Micheldever 2 mins before scheduled time (doors closed probably 2.5 mins before) We arrived into BSK 5 mins early due to some unused pathing allowance Definitely not supposed to leave that early

@ChristineKayNow Every train company has a different policy but for most intercity trains now it is 60 seconds before as we have learnt that it reduces delays and accidents by being able to spend more time ensuring the train is clear to depart safely and on time where possible.

@CjTrains Didn’t it used to be 30 seconds? Is this some sort of inflation?

@daniel_kilburn @87027wolf Yeah exactly, LNER and tbf most TOCs have posters and announcements specific to that station with this information whether it’s 1 minute, 2 minutes before etc and it says to “give yourself plenty of time”

@87027wolf @CjTrains It’s not a ceremony. It’s a period of time to ensure passengers who have both made the train and who have missed it are safe. It is advertised that doors may close up to 60 seconds before, as you so wish

@87027wolf I would say that T-60 seconds has been the industry standard for companies for a while now. It’s to allow for a safe and prompt departure from the station and by giving yourself till the last minute before getting to your train then unfortunately you are risking missing it.

@CjTrains And they are correct, this annoys me. Then it should be publicly advertised as the 16.04 it can still depart at 16.05 if that’s how long the door closing ceremony takes.

@JBTEvans Yeah I understand that one, I suppose it depends on the station as if that was a terminus station most of them aim for doors closed T-120. But I can see how that could be frustrating and a bit excessive.

@CjTrains That’s fair enough but I once had somebody dispatch a 2200 at 21:58:30. The 2206 I was hoping to catch was cancelled. I let him know my feelings.

@ConductorAlbert I always say that you wouldn’t arrive that late for your plane, buses don’t wait unless it’s a timing point etc. They don’t care though they just want a moan 🤣

@CjTrains Had it myself the other day. Doors closing at 30 seconds before. Customer comes strolling up the platform not making any effort to run. Train starts moving and then they start running and shout that's leaving early! 😅😬

@rafthemaster @daniel_kilburn @87027wolf At LNER we do T-60 seconds for LNER, Cross Country and Hull Trains to allow for the safe departure of the trains, extra checks to be made that everyone is clear of the train and to reduce delays. We also dispatch EMR but as these are regional it’s T-30 due to the shorter length.

@daniel_kilburn @87027wolf @CjTrains Why do some operators have 30s and some 60s for door closing - get that the aim of closing early is to allow making sure everyone on & off the train is safe so why different lengths of time?
