In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing." The state then spent $6,200/month to house her kids in foster care. A must-read by @stephannnnie propublica.org/article/georgi…

@AdamCSharp Growing up with Berlin born mom know it well. The other constant word was dussbuttl (sp) meaning lovable idiot for when you called something common a dingsbums.

In German, if you forget the name of something, you wouldn’t say pass me that whatchamacallit or doodad. You’d instead call it a Dingsbums. Another fun German word (though more for bits and bobs) is Krimskrams * Read on for more names for thingamajigs around the world (a thread)

This should preface every discussion of the issue. We are in the absurd position of fighting so people can live in subhuman conditions. The issue is the commodification of housing and the extraction of wealth from the poor. This has to frame every conversation on the issue.

"Some of it is about resource constraints... so advocates sometimes end up defending situations that, while far less than ideal, seem preferable to forcing unhoused people into living situations they don’t want." This is a core dilemma.

If a person sleeping outside turns down a shelter bed, what should be done? for @voxdotcom I looked at how pressure to clear tent encampments has entangled with national debates about forced treatment and the “Housing First” approach to homelessness vox.com/policy/2385660…

Make a 20-track comp of your all-time fav tracks, each artist can only feature once. Not the 'best' songs, the ones that bring instant joy the second you hear the first note, the ones that give other people the best insight into what stirs your soul. Share when ready. #20tracks

It is no exaggeration to say that the @500SongsPodcast is one of the absolute best things to happen to me in my 50s. Slightly behind my kids getting married, slightly above discovering the music of Grant Green. Way above just about everything else! newyorker.com/culture/podcas…

Can you guess what happens when you give kids food stamps? ... ... ... ... They... ⚫live longer, ⚫invest more in human capital, ⚫are more economically self-sufficient, ⚫live in better neighborhoods, ⚫are less likely to be incarcerated. academic.oup.com/restud/advance…
