@Shawridgefarm We find that when sold the straw is typically higher in revenue than the grain (a lot higher in years like this)…without harvesting the straw we wouldn’t grow wheat.

Going to be a serious discussion around our place this winter on the true value of straw. This farm we chopped back, just clipped the heads and took the grain. Added 30% capacity to highly depreciating harvest assets. Red clover off to the races. What's the biomass truly worth long term? It's more than just replacement of macro nutrients. High equipment costs, higher maintenance expenses, higher fertilizer replacement.....There is more to this straw equation then there use to be.

The predicament with the grain industry is what do guys shift acres to next year outside of corn, beans, or wheat? 10% of corn and soybeans is rough 18-20 million acres. What kind of crop can handle that influx of bushels to process? (Spoiler, there isn’t one)

For anyone not farming in Middle Eastern ON, yeah, it’s that dry. More than a 90% deviation from average precipitation over the last 60 days!!

@cropdoc2 I wish the city of St Thomas could do a pre burndown and pre VW build program on the 100billion thistles now dumping their seeds on all us charitable farm neighbours. Rules on weeds don’t apply to Green Energy nonsense.

For the first time, I sprayed preharvest RU on some Canada thistle patches in wheat. About 10 d ago. Why didn't I do this before? I didn't tramp or shatter much wheat following tramlines.
