As all I've done on this platform recently is report overtly racist and downright offensive posts, often with little effect, I've set up as 'classleading' on BlueSky - 'classleading.bsky.social'. I'll continue the reporting in the hope that 'X' starts to do the right thing...

A woman was accused of 'cop-shopping' by police because she'd been to 2 different police stations to report her ex-husband for stalking and threatening her. They told Kelly she needed to ‘cool off’ and to 'give him a break’. He stabbed her and burned her to death just days later. share.google/Iw2BLHMAeeLDOZ…

@ShakinthatChalk I generally like the idea of a uniform from an equity point of view, however I've seen all sorts of smart uniform that doesn't involve parents spending and arm and a leg on branded this that and the other

@Class_Leading The because workplace argument is just so ignorant. Everyone should just be honest and admit it’s a visual arms race competing with neighbouring schools for bestest school

A major mistake in schools is assuming Year 7 needs the least attention. It is often the year group that requires the most work from staff.

@Class_Leading @bphillipsonMP I disagree completely with the final sentence. Hence I believe the failure to embrace, learn, explore, wonder, believe, trust, …. is a case of professional failure. It’s the difference between children’s future and adults’ past. It comes down to paralysis through conservatism.

The Tories' guidance did not deliver the consistency schools need. Labour has strengthened the guidance to make our position explicit – all schools should be phone-free environments for the entire school day. I have written to heads to make that clear. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP I'm simply explaining to you why I use that term and not alternatives. The research says that mobile devices can be helpful, powerful techology that used right helps pupils. However, in school ensuring acceptable risk is very challenging and other solutions give similar benefits.

@Class_Leading @bphillipsonMP You’ve done it again here. Trying to win a point by bringing in unjustified claims eg that using research is “being driven regardless of consequences”. That’s a rather weak debating strategy. Because it is not the same as research informed. “Driven”, “regardless” are the words

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP Yes, they believe it and they also have evidence in their safeguarding logs to back up this belief. I started this thread with 'Staff should not use their own mobile phone for personal reasons in front of pupils throughout the school day', this already happens where I work.

@Class_Leading @bphillipsonMP What school leaders say is invariably “belief”. If schools do think technology is a danger they should be consistent. They also need to look after staff welfare so any ban should apply to staff and leaders only - as role models for young people. Are you ok for your phone to go?

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP ...I'm not ignoring the evidence. I fully acknowledge and accept what it says - low risk. However, for many schools low risk is not acceptable, because the consequences in some cases are severe. It is also not a personal belief but a reflection of what school leaders say.

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP Thanks for the snapshot, however the phrase 'evidence informed' was chosen carefully (rather than evidence-led or evidence-based). Being informed by the evidence is not the same as being driven by it, regardless of the consequences. Also...

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP I'm sure they would love to meet you. That way they can share with you the challenges of online bullying, inappropriate access to social media, secret filming of pupils and teachers (not to mention the online posting of this) while trying to keep their pupils safe.

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP Bring your own devices in school and pupil mobiles are largely unregulated devices. I'm not entirely sure why you feel the need to describe this as 'disingenuous' or 'slippage'. Describing me bringing an additional perspective as an 'anti-intellectual stance' is inaccurate...

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP I think on the ground, practitioners see the (sometimes severe) consequences of unregulated devices. When safer options are available, pragmatism guides practice.

@Class_Leading @bphillipsonMP I think the research on byod/effects of mobiles illustrates few risks. It appears there is a narrative emanating from the dominant conservative narrative which has gained ground which denies the reality and fosters the moral crisis.

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP I don't think technology is the issue, and I'd agree that schools are generally warm to suitable technology. It is possible to use safer managed devices with little compromise without the risks of byod mobile devices.

@Class_Leading @bphillipsonMP Schools and teachers always lag behind technological developments - as has been clear in my work in and with schools since 1976. It isn’t the use of technology that is the problem. It is the inability of leaders and staff to cope with change and envision the future.

@petergates3 @bphillipsonMP From working with many schools, there seems to be general widespread support. This is because schools leaders and staff recognise that phone use in schools create (sometimes significant) problems regarding learning and safety.

@Class_Leading @bphillipsonMP “Schools should be phone-free environments during the school day.” Absolute bloody nonsense! When the adults cant understand and don’t have the courage to deal with the real problem they just impose bans on kids.
