The WW2/Holocaust narrative as we know it is much more recent than people realize. In the 40s and 50s, people basically talked about the war as a terrible, regrettable thing that had happened. It wasn't until the 70s/80s that the narrative we know today was aggressively pushed.

The response to this taught me that we are living in a kind of "nazimania". "Nazis" are less of a historical event and more of a miasma that can't touch anything you like. It's more spiritual than anything. I think of Hogans Heroes, which came out only 20 years after WW2 and was beloved by WW2 vets who fought against the actual nazis. That show basically portrayed the nazis as lovable buffoons, like Homer Simpson.

Military leadership goes through evolutionary selection during warfare. The incompetent commanders die and are succeeded by those with better plans. When armies don’t engage or study wars, they begin to rot and stagnate.
