Andy Burnham says men who identify as women should be allowed to use female toilets and claims only a ‘small minority’ object
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham told a 2022 youth combined authority meeting that biological males who identify as female should have access to women’s toilets.
He said the view that single-sex spaces should be protected for biological women only is “a minority view… and quite a small minority view, actually”.
Burnham added that abuse of women’s spaces by trans people happens in a “tiny, tiny, tiny number of people” and said he supports trans rights.
The comments, from leaked footage, have resurfaced as Burnham bids to win the Makerfield by-election and position himself as a potential Labour leadership challenger.
Tory equalities spokesman Claire Coutinho called his stance “shockingly out of touch”, saying protecting women’s safety, dignity and privacy “is not a minority view it’s the law”.
Women’s rights campaigners have accused him of dismissing legitimate concerns over single-sex spaces.
