On this day 30 years ago I did my first radio interview. Candy Wekesa-Okoboi had been hosting a Saturday talk show on what was then Radio Sanyu. I was part of a programme called Around the World, produced by Samuel Guma. Marion Etiang-Busingye had given me a job in July 1995. She liked my voice but there was no suitable slot. So she handed me over to Sam—who tried his best to fit me in. I think I was mostly in his way. Anyway, leading up to 11 November 1995 I had about three minutes on air each week. That was all I needed—a foot in the door. A chance to watch and learn. I soaked it up from @rs1elvis, who once went on air in his gown the day he graduated from Makerere. He kept fiddling with the Airtrak 90 console, introduced Mr Boombastic by Shaggy to, and loved every second of his job. And from Rasta Rob, who hated being disturbed on air. Meticulous planner, kept notes, never took studio calls. One evening the boss—John Katto—needed to speak to him. Someone from reception ran upstairs, told Rob to put the phone back on the hook because JK was calling. When the call came through: “Rasta Rob speaking—can I quickly help you?” I watched. I learned. Anyway, Candy—who called herself Lynn on air—couldn’t make it that Saturday. She asked me to sit in. Excited? Yes. Nervous? Very. I’d never done anything like it. Guests: @rkabushenga and Dr Ronnie Babigumira. Both regulars. Babs—Namilyango OB—also presented the Sanyu Gospel Show. Topic: the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa. It went well enough for Radio Sanyu to finally put me on payroll. UGX 15,000 a week.

This is how Nairobi became a third home. During an internship I was lured to apply for a management trainee job at a British multinational. After a year, I was sent to under study and train with its member companies in Europe Middle & Africa (EMEA) region. The rest is history.
