The best type of client and families to work with: • Those who don’t have EXPECTATIONS of where their basketball journey will take them, but have perspective to know that a basketball can take them anywhere in life • fully bought-in to the process and find joy in the day to day • Both the player and family understand that Rome wasn’t built in a day • The family plays a role of support and biggest fan

Rick Pitino is right. Every player’s hourglass runs out faster than they think. The practices. The games. The grind. One day… it’s all gone. Cherish every rep. Every moment. Every opportunity. Don’t waste your sand. ⏳

I hope young players notice that in these high caliber basketball games, they are decided by the unsung "role" guys. Yes Wemby and SGA are great, but watch the battle of the 3rd or 4th "best" player or even the 6th man. These are where championships are won and lost.

@coachbrettflory Couldn't agree more. Having grown up in Wichita and out west, when I found out about this event in my HS summer days I was jealous. It's a very cool event. I would think some basketball lovers that run some business would love to be part of it. Spangles or an auto group? Local.

@coachbrettflory If only there was some sort of a National group of people that could discuss these things to set rules. Kind of like an Association of some sort??

@CoachBangle Absolutely does but I have absolutely no idea how they get there. Who is going to form and represent the players Union to negotiate? And then are we gonna have college players go on strike eventually? What a mess 🤣

“Think about growing up with your parents and you got to do whatever the hell you wanted to do instead of them telling you things. Would you be sitting here? I know I wouldn’t." What you want isn’t always what is right for you. Let the right people keep you accountable.

In the years since, he would reach out after big games and congratulate me and our team on our success. Always a huge compliment hearing from him! A class act, and a deserving award!

I got to work with Coach Fiegel in the summers when I first got into coaching. As soon as I got around him he would always light up with basketball and wanted to help young coaches more than I thought anyone would! Nothing was sacred, he was an open book!

Sports in Kansas 2026 Legacy Award Mitch Fiegel, Wichita Collegiate Kansas coaching legend. Mitch Fiegel built one of the premier programs in Kansas high school basketball history, finishing with 623 wins in 864 games over 36 seasons, along with six boys state championships. Known for his relentless, demanding practices and ability to develop depth, Fiegel consistently pushed players to new levels while establishing a standard of excellence at Wichita Collegiate that lasted decades. His impact is seen not only in wins, but in the players he helped develop, including NBA players Maurice Evans and Gradey Dick, along with standout DeAngelo Evans. He also coached his two sons, Cole and Ty, who combined for three state titles during their time in the program. How respected was he by his players? When Fiegel won his 600th career game, nearly 150 former players returned to be there for the moment, a powerful reflection of the relationships he built throughout his career. Beyond his own program, he has long been known as a resource for coaches across the state, always willing to offer advice and help grow the game. Fiegel’s journey began in 1989 at Quivira Heights, where he took a losing team to the 2A state tournament in his first season, setting the tone for what would become a remarkable career. A Pratt native with deep Kansas roots, including family success through his uncle Chuck at Protection, his influence on the game spans generations. Coach is a class act, and it was great hearing him address this year’s award recipients. Now, the keys have been passed. Nate Schmitt led Wichita Collegiate to a state title in his first season, continuing the standard Fiegel built. Welcome to the Sports in Kansas Legacy Club, Coach Fiegel. #sportsinkansas

Preferred Walk-On to National Attention: Kansas State senior lineman Sam Hecht, a 6’4” product of Mill Valley High School, has been selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top athlete with the combination of academics, leadership, and on-field performance. At Mill Valley, Hecht capped his HS career with back-to-back state championships in 2019 and 2020, before taking his talents to Manhattan as a preferred walk on. In 2024, he started all 13 games at center and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors. He logged a team-high 840 offensive snaps, drawing only two penalties all season, while anchoring an offensive line that powered one of the most efficient offenses in school history. Congratulations to the Mill Valley alum! 👏 #sportsinkansas  Photo: Mill Valley Football
