Poway HS Football developed the culture in 2006 and 2007, Qualcomm Stadium back to back, and winning the school’s first ever Section Championship. Those kids started it. Then came the 2011 and 2012 teams (pictured). The talent comes in waves, but the standard doesn’t change!

I’m not disagreeing with you, but most of the athletes that I’ve coached over 24+ years that received D1 scholarships were below those size metrics. Speed, explosiveness, game changer, and grades will get you to DI. But I’ve also coached many great athletes that were “non qualifiers” out of high school. Some didn’t meet the SAT standards. Some didn’t meet the GPA, and one came from an orphanage in Africa and was forced into special education in HS (PS- that young man now has his college degree and is rated as the #2 DT in the country)! The mindset and determination to be great is what will separate the physically blessed from the dawgs. Height and weight is easy to the eye for the man that doesn’t know football. I could list off names for days, of football players in Div 1 and NFL Hall Of Fame that don’t meet these metrics.

A HS QB can throw for 4,000 yards, have 2,000 rushing yards, be awarded All-Conference and All-State...but if this same QB is 5'8" 175 lb, D1 is a long shot. Recruiters look at: 1️⃣ Grades 2️⃣ Size (Ht/Wt) 3️⃣ Speed / Power Metrics 4️⃣ Film, Stats, Accolades ⬆️ In that order.

@weddlesbeard OLD had to enter the “box” more and stop the run more often. “Last” played more against pass/ RPO’s. All are beyond elite at the NFL level, but the “OLD” had to tackle big ass running backs more often! lol . I guess you’re put in both categories! 🏈💪🏼

It’s our job to embarrass our kids from time to time. I’m teaching my daughter that I can have fun and be silly without worrying about what others might think. Coaches don’t usually get the quantity when it comes to marriages and children. But, the “Real One’s” know that quality time destroys quantity in every measurable way! Put it this way- My two days a week with my children has shaped them into who they are today. I just hope they survive at school the next 5 days (2 shelter in places alone just this past week), and don’t forget what we worked on over the previous weekend 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😂. It’s time to bring my kids to Poway Unified instead of San Marcos Unified. When a school district is proud to put that they’re the 5th best school district is San Diego County, “we got a problem people”. There’s not many and San Diego Unified is huge!!! That’s a topic for another day. I just want those busy mothers and fathers to understand that quality destroys quantity every day. Just like studying. Just like reps, just like drills, just like team rosters, just like business, just like life, and just like Jesus lived. Have a great Sunday! Get some quality in today!

@EzraChristense5 , is probably so proud of you representing the tradition of ELITE DL play at PHS. There have been many many many great DL before from Poway. Too many to mention, but they know who they are. I’m not just talking about their CIF Championships or the all-time college sack record (FCS). I’ve been blessed to work with some talented and motivated athletes over my 24yrs. But, Ezra learned to play a 5 shade and take away the B and C like you. Most can’t do that and make big impact plays consistently. It’s a lot to ask. All our DL plays their heart out in a 3 down system vs spread, but two kids could dominate their 6 vs our 3. Especially if they didn’t play both ways. One is currently the #2 DT in nation. And he’s still raw. A man dedicated to Gods plan and a natural game changer. The other, a man dedicated to Gods plan and a natural game changer. Born from different countries. Born with opposite upbringing. Both understanding their gift from God, staying humble, and being game changers. Game changers in life first! The football part becomes easy. Like I learned from my good friend @Sevier5 , and heard again from Coach Holtz- “Do the right thing.” The more you choose the “right thing” the more natural it becomes to you. Eventually all you know or do is the “right thing”. @Sevier5 lives it. I try to. I teach my own children and athletes that. These two ballers I mentioned are ahead of 95% of us already (worldwide). Probably higher than that, but I don’t want them getting complacent 😂. They have a calling. Football is life.
