When the average age that kids quit youth baseball is around 10.5 yrs old, obsessing about playing up to “get them ready” and in turn having crappy in-game experiences seems fairly misaligned.
Meet them where they are.
clint caballero@ClintCab82
topic for the YB bummer power hour: how to identify when a team is ready to “play up”? And what happens when it’s painfully obvious the team cant compete at that level? Coaches are force feeding kids and parents the ONLY way to improve is to play the best teams. @devenmorgan

Coach Nick Saban on baseball players having superior ability to judge the the ball in football (specifically CB/DB); greater athletic intuition is developed in baseball players. #shegone

@MrMaxPrice 💯 Played 2 years of Legion and 1 year of travel ball in high school way back when. Legion doubleheaders were so much more fun than travel ball tournaments every weekend.

Unfortunately, most players today can’t possibly fathom how incredible American Legion baseball was a couple of decades ago. Hands down, the most fun I ever had playing baseball.

If your son is between 15–18 years old, stands 5'9" to 6'2", and weighs only 130–145 lbs, he is likely underweight for his frame especially if he’s an athlete.
⚠️ Under-fueling during puberty can lead to:
• Poor muscle development
• Increased risk of injury
• Hormonal disruption
• Delayed growth and maturity
If you want to help your athlete gain lean muscle, build strength, and thrive on and off the field nutrition must be a top priority.
✅ Start here:
• 3–4 balanced meals daily (with high-quality protein, carbs, and healthy fats)
• 2+ performance snacks around practices, lifts, or games
• 7–10 hours of sleep nightly
• Plenty of fluids (not energy drinks)
• Recovery time + less screen time before bed
🍕🍭 Energy drinks, candy, chips, and pizza are not fuel. They’re fine occasionally but not daily, and not if performance and health are the goal.
Set regular meals and snacks like you would practices and games. Your child’s development depends on it.

Punishment at practice is lazy.
It might feel like you’re teaching a lesson…
but most of the time, kids just shut down.
Positivity and praise take more effort.
They require patience.
They require you to notice what’s going right.
But they build confidence.
They keep kids engaged.
And they actually make lessons stick.
Important note….
Discipline is not the same as punishment.
You can still run a disciplined team.
You can still set clear expectations.
You can still hold kids accountable.
You just don’t need punishment to do it.

@LegKickNationOG 100%! So many kids get to high school w/ no clue on the bases. You can tell the ones who were on teams like this one, and then the ones who were allowed freedom on the bases. My son plays 10u & every coach I watch is screaming instructions the entire game. No exploration allowed.
English

I don’t want to take anything away from the energy and excitement of the coach.
But this isn’t how kids learn THE game. This is how coaches outsmart youth players to win A Game.

@devenmorgan So more tee work, feel good BP, and blocked practice. Got it.
