Play Callers - Do you script your opening drive? If so how many? 3? 6? 10? We did a tentative 10 last year - could adjust if we needed to. We really liked it and it seemed to get us locked in early with our best plays/formations. We had a lot of success with it.

In the Rose and Peach Bowls, Indiana inadvertently had the Adidas logo intended for the pants on the jersey, and vice versa. They’ve corrected it for the #NationalChampionship, so if they lose tonight, you know why.

In the middle of a state quarterfinal game that we were winning, during an undefeated season, I still had fans in the stands yelling play calls at me. We were 12–0 at that point. We ended up 13–1. And it still wasn’t enough for some people. That night it finally clicked: no matter what the record says, there will always be critics. Always someone who thinks they can do it better. Always a parent or booster who knows exactly what play we should have run on 3rd and 8. Once I accepted that truth, something changed. I stopped coaching for the stands and started coaching only for the kids in our locker room and the staff in our office. Every decision since then has been filtered through one simple question: “What is best for our kids?” Not what looks coolest. Not what quiets the loudest critic. Not what gets the most retweets. What is actually best for the young men we get to coach every day. If you’re waiting for the day when everyone finally approves of how you run your program… you’re going to be waiting forever. Raise the standard anyway. Protect the culture anyway. Cut the cancer anyway (player or coach). Run your system anyway. Because the day you start lowering the bar to make everyone happy is the day the program dies. 13–1 didn’t silence the critics. But it sure felt good knowing we did it our way, for our kids.
