Prep Football Burlington-Edison 17, Mount Vernon 14 The Burlington-Edison Tigers traveled across the Skagit River bridge on Friday night with one goal in mind and that was to keep the Battle of the Bridge trophy in their possession and bring it back home with them. They did just that, beating Mount Vernon 17-14 in a game that will be talked about for years to come. Mount Vernon scored to open things up in the first quarter on a TD run by Diego Salaz, his first of two rushing TD’s on the night to go with his 187 yards rushing. The Tigers couldn’t get anything going on the ground in the 1st quarter but were able to answer in the 2nd quarter on a 63 yard jet sweep pass from QB Owen Stewart to wide receiver Evan Forthun. The track sprinter took it 63 yards, weaving through Bulldogs defenders and out running them to tie the game at 7-7. Burlington-Edison looked to take the lead right before halftime. However, QB Owen Stewart scampered down to the Bulldog 3 yard line before being stripped of the ball with 5 seconds remaining on the clock. MV took a knee to end the half in a 7-7 tie. It became a defensive battle in the 2nd half, with no scoring in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, the Bulldog ground game attack started to wear on the Tigers and Salaz crossed into the end zone for his 2nd TD of the game, taking a 14-7 lead late in the 4th quarter. On B-E’s next possession they were stopped at midfield on a 4th and 2 run, only gaining one yard. MV took over and looked to run out the clock with roughly 4 mins remaining. However, Dario Supelveda and a swarm of Tiger defensive linemen caused Salaz to fumble and recovered the ball. The Tigers marched right down the field on some big runs and passes by Stewart, Forthun, Ben Daniels and Ben Belisle. With under two minutes to go, QB Owen Stewart ran it in on a tough run up the middle from 9 yards out to again tie the game 14-14. On the next series, Mount Vernon QB Kaiden Anderson found Brady Peterson for a large gain to set the Bulldogs up at midfield with under a minute to play. However, on the next play, Anderson was picked off by Madden Whitlock, who returned the interception for what appeared to be the game winning TD, however he stepped out of bounds on the 19 yard line. The Tigers ran a few plays to set up Senior kicker Cannon Cook for a game winning field goal attempt from 25 yards. Earlier in the game, the Bulldogs blocked a similar kick from Cook. However, this time it was good! With time expiring on the clock as the kick sailed through the uprights, the Tigers players, coaches, and fans stormed the field to celebrate the victory of the 119th Battle of the Bridge! Let me tell you what concerns me… if you’ve seen the looks on Kevin O’Connell’s face… if you’ve seen Justin Jefferson’s mopey body language… nobody SAYS anything, but you can tell these guys are wondering… is this kid really gonna be our franchise QB?

@QuincyAvery Never understood this take…comes across incredibly soft. Football is a game of adversity, go watch the NBA if you want no weather and “precision”

People who love weather games are the same ones who prefer college football over the NFL. They enjoy the chaos and the idea of football but miss the precision of ball at its highest level
