Losing Lou Holtz isn’t just a loss—it’s a transfer of responsibility. At some point, you stop being shaped… and start shaping others. What he gave me doesn’t stop with me.

“We’re here to mourn his loss. I also want to celebrate his life. If you met him, you were happy. If you interacted w/ him, you were lucky. If you were friends w/ him, you were favored. If you were coached by him, you were fortunate. If he was your dad, you were blessed.”-Skip

Thank you to everyone who attended the Funeral and made the walk. It was cold, windy and snowing but it was a special moment in the Holtz Family life.

Lou Holtz didn’t just win games — he changed the temperature of every room he walked into. He had that rare mix of conviction, humor, and edge that made you sit up straighter without ever feeling small. He believed in people so loudly that they eventually started believing in themselves. He taught Notre Dame that excellence isn’t an act, it’s a habit. That discipline isn’t punishment, it’s love. And that a team becomes a family the moment it decides to play for something bigger than itself. What made him special wasn’t the championship — it was the standard. The way he could turn doubt into fuel. The way he could make a walk‑on feel like an All‑American. The way he could take a program, a locker room, or a single kid having a bad day and remind them that greatness is a choice. Lou Holtz leaves behind more than memories. He leaves behind a blueprint: work hard, laugh often, tell the truth, and never apologize for expecting the best from yourself and the people you lead. Notre Dame didn’t just lose a coach. It lost a voice that shaped generations — a man who made belief feel contagious

Wow! What a tough day. Literally in the middle of a golf swing, someone yells out Coach Holtz passed away. I was hoping and praying it was another Ai generated false story but unfortunately not this time! A flood of emotions came over me when I realized I will never be able

"Today everybody wants to talk about their rights and their privileges. 50 years ago, people talked about their obligation and responsibility. You have obligations to other people. If you want to fail, you have the right to fail. You do not have the right to cause other people to fail because you do not do everything to the very best of your ability."

“Notre Dame mourns the loss of Lou Holtz, a legendary football coach, a beloved member of the Notre Dame family and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Among his many accomplishments, we will remember him above all as a teacher, leader and mentor who brought out the very best in his players, on and off the field, earning their respect and admiration for a lifetime. In the years since leaving the head football coach position, Lou, together with his beloved wife, Beth, supported Notre Dame in innumerable ways, among them making possible the refurbishment of four residence hall chapels and the construction of the Beth and Lou Holtz Grand Reading Room on the first floor of Hesburgh Library — tangible signs of their great love for their Catholic faith and the mission of Our Lady’s University. Whenever Notre Dame called to ask for his help, Lou answered with his characteristic generosity, and he will be sorely missed. The prayers of the entire Notre Dame community are with his family and many friends in this time of sorrow. May he rest in the peace and love of Christ.” - University of Notre Dame President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C.

FLASHBACK: President Trump presented the Medal of Freedom to the late Lou Holtz at the White House in 2020. "The two most important days of your life...One's the day you're born; the other is the day you discover why you’re born.” “We discovered we're born basically to help other people and to overcome problems and difficulties that are going to come our way.” “And I just could not be prouder to be part of this country. I could not be prouder to receive this award from an individual I respect and admire as much as President Trump.”
