Track & field is one of the last places in a school where the football captain, the valedictorian, the band kid, the wrestler, and the quiet kid who never thought he belonged can all wear the same jersey. Track does not care what a kid’s last name is, how much money he has, what side of town he lives on, or how popular he is. Out here, none of that matters. Somewhere between the workouts, the bus rides, and the meets, kids who might never have spoken to each other start to build real respect. It is hard not to respect somebody when you have seen what they are willing to push through and how much they are willing to give. That is a big reason track & field will always mean more to me than just times, marks, and points.

Chesney on Thursday said good football players can’t be “bad at life.” I asked OC Dean Kennedy about it. “If you’re going to be bad in the classroom, you’re going to be late for academics, we can’t trust on third and 7 to run the correct route. … You have to attack everything.”

I am constantly reminded in coaching that experience doesn’t equal expertise without consistent pursuit of growth and seeking out experts to continue to learn from. Telling someone how many years you’ve been doing something isn’t a flex without the ability to explain how you pursued excellence and best practices during that time. The “I’ve done this for x years” drop is an empty phrase by itself.

I’m fairly certain one of the DBs in this drill got a concussion on this rep. Add this to a list of drills I question if it’s the most effective way to practice a skill. In fact, add this close to the top of that list

I haven’t seen one drill by Indiana that doesn’t make sense to me…Yes I have a thread of like 20 drills that I question is that the most effective way to practice a skill. Indiana does not appear a single time. Notre Dame is another program all their drills I have seen are good.
