Track & field is one of the last places in a school where the football captain, the valedictorian, the band kid, the wrestler, and the quiet kid who never thought he belonged can all wear the same jersey.
Track does not care what a kid’s last name is, how much money he has, what side of town he lives on, or how popular he is. Out here, none of that matters. Somewhere between the workouts, the bus rides, and the meets, kids who might never have spoken to each other start to build real respect.
It is hard not to respect somebody when you have seen what they are willing to push through and how much they are willing to give.
That is a big reason track & field will always mean more to me than just times, marks, and points.

It’s more about the timing of when the outdoor track season falls in the school year. Most of the Fall and Winter sports are not individual team sports and require 100% of the athletes time commitment. In NC our Spring sports are Women’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis, and Baseball/Softball. So it draws a diverse crowd of athletes to Track & Field. Our team sizes average about 35+ girls and boys a piece. So no one’s banned, it’s just available for more athletes from all areas.

💯 Ours are allowed to do both, it’s just difficult for them to commit due to the scheduling. I have had a couple golf guys do both, but miss a lot of our practice time. Baseball has a high volume schedule and almost always will have a game on our meet days. I have a few baseball guys on my indoor track team in the winter. They love it, but being in a small community, it’s all baseball in the spring!

The West Wilkes boys track & field team dominated our meet at Starmount HS on 4/2/26, we scored 134 total points for a clear first place finish! We had an impressive 31 individual PR day! - Winners Win!

The greatest thing track and field ever gives a kid is not a medal, a record, or a scholarship. It gives him the habit of facing the truth. And once a young person learns to face the truth about his effort, his discipline, his body language, and his preparation, you have given him something bigger than sport. You have given him backbone.

Sometimes a bad performance is life asking you one hard question: are you soft, or are you serious about what you are doing? Anybody can feel good when it’s easy. The individuals people remember are the ones who take a hard day, choke the excuses out of it, and turn it into fuel.

I’m with you. I am in a school gym and on a school track every day, and the whole point is simple: we coach student athletes. If a system starts asking for Thursday to Sunday travel, season hopping, and “showcase” promises, it pulls kids away from exactly what builds them, consistency, accountability, and being part of something bigger than themselves.
I’ve always been pro standards. Earn your spot, honor your season, and be where your feet are. If a model can’t thrive without poaching high school kids and selling hope, it needs to be called what it is.

100% agree, Tony. If your model requires kids to miss class, travel Thu to Sun, and get pulled from their high school season, it is not athlete development, it is customer acquisition. When money enters the relationship, playing time becomes a receipt and parents become management. Club can supplement. It cannot replace education based sport. Keep it affordable, in season, teacher coached, and earned!

Someday, when education-based sports are extinct (driven out by overripe capitalism), we will look back nostalgically to when kids played sports in season, teachers were coaches, playing was affordable, and being a student-athlete was a thing.

Biggest challenge for me is intent, but the root is exposure and reps long before they ever show up to track. Those “sprint drills” are everywhere now, PE classes and other sports warmups, and they’re often taught as motions, not true sprint mechanics. So kids stack up thousands of low-quality reps, low posture, no stiffness, no purpose, and “going through the motions” becomes their default. Then we ask them to hit the real version at sprint intensity, tall posture, frontside rhythm, violent switch, strike down, and it suddenly feels brand new. The good part is once they get a week or two back with me on the track team, the reps climb back to the proper quality, but every year I’m re-coaching the same athletes because they keep getting the watered-down version outside our program. Bad reps don’t disappear, they have to be replaced with great ones.
