Matt Painter shares why he stopped overselling recruits and started telling them the truth.
"If you're gonna become one of our top 2 or 3 scorers, here's how I'm gonna use you. If you don't, then you're gonna have to blend in with those top 2 or 3 scorers from an offensive standpoint."
Then he asked them a question:
"Has anybody said this to you? Other coaches said this to you?"
"And they'll be like, 'No, you're the only one.'"
"I go, 'Well, they're gonna say it to you. They're just not gonna say it to you until November 1st before that first exhibition game.'"
Other coaches wait until it's too late. Painter tells them upfront.
Then he admitted something most coaches won't:
"I used to be one of those guys. And I didn't realize what I was doing. I just thought, 'Hey man, I gotta sell Purdue, I gotta sell this opportunity.'"
"But all we're doing is over-selling it. And if we get them, we're creating a problem."
Overpromising creates disappointment. Honesty creates alignment.
You have to tell people the truth even when it's uncomfortable.

Brad Underwood waited 26 years for a Div 1 head coaching job. Yes, he spent 26 years coaching high school, JUCO, and assisting.
At 49 years old he was hired to coach SF Austin. At 53 he was hired by Illinois. He finally reached the Final Four after turning 60.
The point: Sometimes if you truly want to be great you have to pay your dues. You have to stay the course and trust the process.
We want microwaved success so badly. There are 20-30 year olds mulling over quitting the profession because it isn’t happening fast enough. You gotta understand that a high level coaching career is earned, not given.
Congrats to Coach Underwood for sticking with the dream. He did what a lot can’t do: he waited. And he was rightfully rewarded.

“Most people don’t want be pushed that hard. They want to be pushed to their level of comfort. You need coaches that push you outside your comfort zone because that’s how you grow and that’s how you develop self confidence and self esteem. They push you to deal with failure,” Tom Brady

Rick Pitino was asked what stops people from being great. His answer was one word.
"Ego stops greatness. I call it edging greatness out."
"In a spiritual sense, ego is edging God out. But ego is edging greatness out."
And he made a key distinction:
"I'm not talking about confidence. You have to be a confident person."
"But ego really gets you to where you think you've arrived. You think you know it all. You stop learning. You stop listening."
That's the trap. Confidence keeps you hungry. Ego convinces you that you've already made it.
You lose your hunger and humility.
"Learning and listening are important for great leaders. Great leaders have to listen and they have to continue to learn and surround themselves with people that are better than them."
EGO = Edging Greatness Out
The moment you think you've arrived is the moment you stop growing.
Stay confident. Stay humble. Never stop learning.

Rick Barnes made a great point tonight, and it's something that makes so much sense but I'd never thought of it in that exact way.
Barnes said one of the biggest keys to any team's improvement during the season is the work ethic of those 3-4 guys on every team who probably don't play as many minutes as they should.
He said if those guys are maniacs every day in practice and consistently push the main rotation guys, a team will get better.

This dude is wise beyond his years
“You disappoint people. It comes with the territory... Your loyalty is to each of your players, but your ultimate loyalty is to the team."
