If Europe wants to be a geopolitical actor, we need to be more strategic in our external action. At today’s Development Council, we will discuss how Europe can better align aid, trade, security, and defence partnerships with both the development needs of our partners and our own strategic interests. Global Gateway investments must focus where they can have the greatest impact, and where countries align with our interests. If a partner country supports Russia or Iran, our engagement has to remain flexible so we can realign accordingly. My press remarks ↓

In 2009, Google took a creative and eco-friendly approach to maintaining the grounds of its Mountain View, California campus. Instead of using noisy, gas-powered lawnmowers, the company hired a herd of 200 goats to graze on the grass. The goats were brought in by California Grazing and spent about a week naturally trimming the vegetation while also fertilizing the soil with their manure. The initiative was part of Google’s broader sustainability efforts. It helped reduce air pollution, lowered fire risk by clearing dry grass, and kept the campus much quieter than traditional mowing. Employees reportedly enjoyed the unusual sight of the goats roaming the grounds. Google has since brought the goats back in later years for vegetation management, making it a charming and environmentally conscious tradition at one of the world’s most famous tech campuses.

Good to speak to @EdwardGLuce at Lennart Meri Conference about Russia’s war against Ukraine, the Middle East and the state of trans-Atlantic relations. On Russia, the most important thing is that we keep up the pressure because they are not at the point of coming to the negotiation table to actually negotiate.

As always, a good and substantive conversation with President of France @EmmanuelMacron. We were able to cover many issues, and I am grateful for our coordination across all areas. I thanked Emmanuel for his principled condemnation of Russian strikes on our cities and communities. These attacks make very clear what Russia is and why we all need to strengthen our collective defense against all threats. France is ready to work on anti-ballistic capabilities. This is a strong decision and an important step. We also discussed boosting our ability to repel Russian attacks right now. Thank you for the readiness to reinforce our air defense. We also spoke about the European track and the opening of all negotiation clusters in the near future. France supports Ukraine and understands how important this step is for all Ukrainians.
