1970 NIT Champions....wearing the famous Apollo 11 uniforms. In November 1969, less than four months after the moon landing, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins visited Marquette for a dinner and campus event. Capitalizing on “moon fever,” Al McGuire announced that Marquette would retire jersey number 11 in honor of Apollo 11, even though none of the astronauts had any direct tie to the program. Team captain Joe Thomas presented the astronauts with Marquette jogging suits during the visit, which Aldrin later wrote became one of his most‑used gifts from the post‑mission tour.
