I 1988 blev byen udsat for et gasangreb, som kostede 5.000 uskyldige sjæle livet og efterlod byen med et ar, der stadig findes den dag i dag – selv generationer senere. Der findes stadig mennesker, der lider af følgerne af angrebet. Jeg levede de første 12 år af mit liv i byen. Det er rigtig svært at vokse op i en by, som mest er kendt for denne tragedie. Hvert år op til årsdagen skulle vi gense billeder og videoer af, hvad der skete den dag, som nu ligger 38 år tilbage. Det værste år var uden tvivl i 2003. Inden USA og Vesten angreb Irak for at fjerne Saddam, var byen kommet i en slags zombietilstand. Forestil dig alle de trusler fra et regime, som truede byen med at angribe igen – og denne gang endnu værre. USA angreb Irak den 20. marts. Byen var i choktilstand, og folk havde forberedt sig på at dø.
