Canadian visits to the US are down sharply and the trend is accelerating. Statistics Canada recorded a 31.5% drop in Canadian return trips from the US compared to February 2024, before trade tensions took hold. Land travel has been hit hardest, down 33% since April 2025, which matters because road crossings account for more than two-thirds of all Canadian trips to the US. 
The contraction showed no sign of reversing in early 2026, with January data showing a year-over-year decline of roughly 23%, broad-based across all travel modes. 
The economic damage is substantial. IMPLAN modeling projects that a sustained 20% drop in Canadian tourism alone could cost the US $4.2 billion in visitor spending and 35,000 jobs, with nearly $500 million in lost state and local tax revenues. 
The Seattle Art Museum reported a 50% drop in Canadian visitors, while the Ringling Museum in Sarasota saw its Canadian numbers fall by more than half year-over-year.  Las Vegas finished 2025 with its lowest visitor count since 2010, excluding the COVID years. 
Meanwhile, the money is staying home. Canadian domestic tourism GDP grew at an annualized 4.8% in Q4 2025, even as the broader economy contracted by 0.6%. Accommodation and dining spending within Canada rose 5.6% for the year.  Canadians are not travelling less. They are travelling differently, and the US is no longer the default destination.
