@BMcGrewvy 1. I’m not taking this very seriously. Tone is difficult to convey. 2. Converting to Catholicism wasn’t the popular trendy thing it is now back in 2019. I converted the following year and didn’t know any famous popular converts. 3. I mean… there’s consistent polling.

I have no idea why he’s speaking the way he is. Obviously, what he’s trying to say is that he thinks this particular war is immoral. However, he’s going about making that clear by means of these apparent sweeping generalizations that seem to contradict all his past generalizations about war. My point is that he was obviously not a pacifist, so you’d have to believe that he’s changed his mind and is disagreeing with the views of his order’s namesake in order to believe that he is one now. I think he’s just speaking way more generally than he actually believes/means.

BANNON: We need to get out of this situation where Christians are supplicants to the Israel gov’t. over the most sacred sites in Christendom. This is absurd. Does Netanyahu decide if the Catholic Church can have mass at the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday? I don’t think so. Christians need to take control of the Christian sites.

Yeah the Bible isn’t a systematic theology manual. If you’re wanting the Bible to be like Calvin’s Institutes or Aquinas’ Summa, you’ve got a genre problem. I can tell you what the Bible says and how every single Christian interpreted what it says on the topic. We agree about what it says. Every Protestant argument on this is about the connotation of what it says. The text doesn’t say “until… and then after she lost her virginity.” The problem you have is that a connotation is only real if the people who speak the language agree on it. However, the people who originally translated the Bible for you (Jerome to Latin, Calvin to French, Luther to German, Wycliffe to English) don’t agree with you that that’s a connotation of the word, and the historical theologians who underpin your systematic theology (presumably Augustine, Athanasius, Anselm, Calvin perhaps) insist that you’re wrong as a theological matter.

I never understood the purpose of this doctrine. Obviously Mary was a virgin when she had Jesus, but why must she remain perpetually so? Especially when the Bible talks about Jesus’s brothers. She was married to Joseph and sex within marriage is good, not sinful.

Yeah when Jerome translated the Bible for everyone and then Helvetius, a layman, argued that “until” connotes that way in Jerome’s own translation, he got pretty mad about that. So did every church father you care about (Augustine) and all the Protestant reformers. If “until” connoted the way you’re assuming in Greek and Hebrew, you end up concluding things like “the Father revokes Christ’s kingship once hell is defeated” and that “Jesus ceases to be with us after the apocalypse.”

@hunderscorep3 @FaithPundit @jardiniernormie Just as it would’ve been wildly inappropriate to open the Ark of the Covenant and put a copy of Plato’s Republic in there (as excellent as that book is), it would’ve been wildly inappropriate for Joseph to enter and conceive his kids where God did. In fact that would be worse.

@FaithPundit @jardiniernormie God could’ve done all sorts of things. He could’ve emphasized the tabernacle’s holiness somehow without prohibiting unconsecrated people from entering. It was improper for Joseph to go where the Holy Spirit did. That’s just how God decided to do it.

@RealRageBadger @FaithPundit @jardiniernormie 1) It’s more that God is holy and Joseph wasn’t yet. 2) Before marriage’s elevation to a sacrament by Jesus, the Bible tells you that sex was profane. That’s why after having sex, you couldn’t go to the tabernacle for a while because you couldn’t be in sacred spaces.

Sharing this story all over the US was a mistake. I’m sorry for her, but this is a gruesome story about someone nowhere close to my community. We don’t have to dwell on every gruesome thing that happens in the world. It’s temptation to despair.
