I’ve still never heard a good explanation for this verse from those who reject Sola Scriptura. “I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.” (1 Corinthians 4:6)

If Catholic/Orthodox Church didn’t canonize the Bible…. Please provide the NAMES of the people who did canonize it Don’t tell me it was accepted by a group of “Random Christians” Names!

@FaithPundit @CapturingChrist I’m pretty sure Gavin believes in saltines and Welch’s grape, and probably once monthly.

In short, early Church gatherings were intimately Catholic. Gavin quotes Justin Martyr in his video saying the following: “For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.” This is simply not compatible with Baptist theology.

What would it have been like to attend a worship gathering in 150 AD? New video out today, recounting Justin Martyr's description and drawing implications. I am also going to make this one into a shorter animated video, Lord willing (will be a few months).

That was a misspeak on my part, I’m not claiming (or mean to claim) Catholics believe works are what justifies them, rather that works are necessary to display a true faith. I think most Protestants would agree to this, barring a few out there radical Protestants who don’t hold to most historic Protestant confessions (which also exist in the Catholic realm as well)

Since Jesus & Paul REJECTED Sola Fide (“Faith alone”), it’s obviously not the “true faith in the true Christ and the true gospel.” It’s made-up, as James felt the need to made clear 2000 years ago: “…a man is justified by works and NOT by faith alone.”

For the record, I have no issues with the church establishing core doctrines; and particularly how to interpret those core doctrines (aka mechanisms of faith, the trinity, etc.) It’s when the church moves to codify doctrine that is *clearly* a later invention and not found among the early church (ex. Assumption of Mary)

The church said they settled it but a simple look at church history shows how much division, infighting, and debate there is over those topics. Whether it be Protestant reformation, the Catholic/Orthodox split, or even the infighting within the Catholic Church; there is plenty of room for private interpretation all throughout church history.

@jardiniernormie So why is Mary’s perpetual virginity a crucial belief that has to be mandated to be universally understood by the church?

@BillArnoldTeach @BrittRooted Denying the virgin birth is one thing, saying she was perpetually a virgin until her death is another and that quote doesn’t mean anything in relation to that.

When it comes to the perpetual virginity of Mary, do you agree with the Catholic view or with the view of Protestant reformers Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, and John Wesley?

@BillArnoldTeach Do you think it’s feasible/possible in the early church Presbyters were also picking successors?

Roman Catholicism did not begin with Jesus! The early Christian believers were not Roman Catholic! The early church was largely made up of Jewish believers, who also taught the believing Gentiles the scriptures of the Old Testament and how Jesus the Messiah is the fulfillment of the promised redeemer!
