@curtish5 @ianbergnet @ApoStructura I’m not advocating for UBI. I pay a +50% effective tax rate, so a lot of other people’s UBI would come out of my income. Was only clarifying how it’s intended to work.

So I get my 25K back but also get to pay for somebody else's 25K. Sounds like sleight of hand welfare to me. I know AI and robots have already replaced hundreds of thousands of jobs and are coming for everyone's job. The transition is going to be brutal and life on the other end is going to completely different. I don't know if we're even biologically capable of living without worry. Makes me glad to be retired. I wish you youngsters good luck.

The U.S. could literally do $20,000/y UBI today without raising taxes if there were no other forms of welfare. If you discarded every program except military/infrastructure/law enforcement/debt repayment, the U.S. federal government would have $20,000 left per adult to spend.

@curtish5 @ianbergnet @ApoStructura Think of it as a large standard deduction that you get even if you pay less than 25k in taxes. Lots of people pay a lot more than 25k.

@ianbergnet @ApoStructura If everybody is working and getting the 25K aren't they just getting their own money back? "Universal" does mean everybody doesn't it?

The Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act would generate over $6 trillion over the next decade—without raising taxes on 99.85% of American households. This wealth tax for millionaires and billionaires could pay for universal child care, free community college, Medicare expansion, and more.

@TheBigHurtHQ @maxtmcc Yes. Empirically, people accelerate purchase decisions in an inflationary environment. The higher the inflation, the greater this effect.

@maxtmcc Counter: When there's high inflation, do people run out and spend their money as quickly as possible before it loses value (aside from gold and crypto investors)?

@CurtisLeMay_fan @GaryWinslett That’s not true. People literally have to spend to live. Nobody would simply stop spending. If that were to be assumed to be true does capital accumulation cease under inflation?

@captgouda24 There are a collection of good reasons, but one of the most intuitively satisfying is that it provides a positive incentive to reinvest wealth.

@JaredC47931 @jdcmedlock @MockYuah 1.) New technology creates more efficient way of delivering same service. 2.) Workers doing it "the old way" no longer needed. We will need fewer fast food workers for the same reason we needed fewer loom operators.

@gfodor @Aella_Girl @thegenesisbl0ck @Aella_Girl was being facetious to make a point. I’m not required to obtain consent to my face in public. Neither, is it necessary for a breastfeeding woman to obtain consent to feed her child in public.

@Aella_Girl @thegenesisbl0ck it's presumed to be part of the social contract, and is largely accepted, that going to a place where humans will be comes with an implicit agreement to see the faces of others if you choose to use your sense of vision without any proxy like a VR headset. rare L

@JonahDispatch "Broadside"? Give me a fucking break. The article is merely asking if it's gone too far. Not all of us WORSHIP DOGS, but you nutters find that unacceptable, and try to dog shame us. The shame is on you. It's fucking gotten to the point of ridiculous. Can't go ANYWHERE

I am probably going to write about the BBC broadside against dogs and dog-ownership. But it's worth remembering that one of the oldest rules in journalism --predating social media by a century - is that dogs, anti-and pro-dog sentiment, is great for circulation or "virality." That said, screw the BBC and their anti-dog propaganda.

@wil_da_beast630 Sadly, I get why the lady on the right stays. She has low self esteem and doesn’t think she can do better. The lady on the left is what puzzles me. She’s not attractive, but she’s slim, and can certainly do better. She’s either a true degenerate or something else is going on.

I've been dunked on by Noah Kulwin. Yay? Given his politics (super anti-Zionist, anti-Israel), I think he's making fun of me for feeling bad that a Jewish school has extra security. Or he's just anti-pool noodles.

@ChrisMartzWX Holocene was about 0.7C warmer than pre-industrial age temps (+/- 0.5C) Currently we’re warmer than that (1C above pre-industrial baseline). The rate of change is notable and it’s reasonable to be curious why it took 10 millennia to cool 0.7C, but only a century to warm 1C.

Democratic senators Cory Booker, Ruben Gallego and Elissa Slotkin all told Politico they wouldn’t go on Hasan Piker’s show. But they have all been on Bill Maher’s show, who says Islam is like “the mafia”, the Muslim world has “too much in common” with ISIS, Muslims bring “desert stuff” to the west, and has also used the N word on his show. Why the double standard? Slotkin was on Maher’s show *yesterday*
