@21percentgroup @amwilson_opera is right. My college has many non-stipendiary JRFs. I spend time with them almost every day. Talented researchers, with prestigious funding awards, who feel fortunate, not remotely exploited. They say that it enriches their life, with minimal responsibilities.

Non-stipendiary JRFs must show independent financial support — often through a paid departmental role, though private means suffice Logic mirrors that of low-paid internships Such posts favour those without dependents or with alternative sources of income, narrowing access
Alexandra Wilson@amwilson_opera

@21percentgroup Some misunderstanding here, I think. These are basically college affiliations for people who have a paid role in their department and need a college attachment. At this stage of career, I don't think anyone would be taking a non-stipendiary JRF and calling it a job.

Hi @duncancraig_, I read your article below about parkrun. You have captured well the enormous positive benefits for physical & mental health that parkrun has brought to millions. You described the controversy over transgender women (males) holding female parkrun records as….

On a misty morning in 2004, 13 people met for a timed run. Two decades later, Paul Sinton-Hewitt’s ‘selfish’ solution for his depression is saving the NHS £600 million a year. @tmalsburg It's a tough time all around. But spare a thought for the US colleagues who are facing all kinds of challenges this year. Some international students are nervous about leaving the country during their degrees. And some schools are pausing grad student recruitment entirely.

Can we please stop holding important conferences in the US? One of my students is affected by the full travel ban and for others it just doesn't seem sufficiently safe. I love my US colleagues and would have enjoyed attending HSP and ACL/CoNNL but it's simply not an option at this point.

Great to see my UMD colleague Charlotte Vaughn recognized with the "Linguistics, Language, and the Public" award from @LingSocAm . Working on the Language Science Station at Planet Word was one of the most fun research projects I've been involved in.
Linguistic Society of America@LingSocAm

The PR Committee is excited to announce their 2026 Award Winners! Congratulations to Cathleen O’Grady for winning the Linguistics Journalism Award. And congratulations to the winner of the Linguistics, Language, and the Public Award, Charlotte Vaughn! buff.ly/nUOOM3f

@william_whyte In my case, what I was promised about the adventure of a new humanities building - by you - was 100% accurate. And it is indeed wonderful. Thank you!

@william_whyte The building is beautiful. But even more beautiful is the sea change that we are already seeing - in just the first 2 days - in how people interact with each other. Thank You!

@jgault13 Extra good to watch this on the BBC feed. Cram and Radcliffe were not like "Who the heck is this?" Cram: "I've known about her since she was a teenager, and here's why this is so incredibly cool."

@TimHutchings1 @parkrunUK Probably a far greater number finished while skipping a whole lap. Why no outrage over this far bigger issue? Because the point is about not adjudicating and not judging.

I just wish @parkrunUK - so good for society, community, family, kids, adults, togetherness, & fabulous in other respects - weren't so PC-weak on this issue. Can't they see what is going on? Others previously blinded by PC'ness, are coming back to the real world.

Yesterday at least 6 males ran in the Female category in UK parkrun. One got 1st Female. His haul of 1st Female finishes is now approaching 70. He ran London Marathon in the Senior Men’s category so is willing & able to stay out of the Female category when the rules say so…
