Depending how you measure the crime area in Barcelona's center is even bigger though, but it's more pickpocketing in the Gothic Quarter than violent crime, but still... What you see is European cities are starting to mirror cities in the United States now: ask any American and of course you avoid the downtown, it's always crime, drugs and poverty Historically this was NOT the case in Europe! Downtown areas in European capitals were historical and beautiful, now they're overrun by crime and starting to be no-go zones

🇪🇸 Barcelona is particularly interesting The tourist center used to be just pickpockets targeting tourists, but now you have the highest crime rate in El Raval with drug dens/squats (narco piso), violent robberies and stabbings The problem as a tourist in a new city you'd never know that because Google Maps doesn't tell you But Hoodmaps does 😊

@ramit Ramit, I've been with you since '09. Wouldn't leave over this, just want to speak up here for LatAm, the region least likely to remove shoes. Back in the US now, I think those homes refrain from asking us. I like to think they imagine me going Donnie Brasco if they try.

AMAZING You can have a major New York Times profile in the last week, best-selling books, a 20-year business, but if you’re a woman or POC, a broke white man will pipe up & give you unsolicited “business advice” The real lesson: YOU DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN! Just laugh at them
Grant@Grantsrants317

@ramit @SenTuberville You’re messing up your business speaking about politics man. Good way to lose 50% of your audience.

@Cat_lucy1 "Do they not feel guilty they're disturbing other people?" They're not even aware, much less feeling guilty about it. The bus is no big deal. In middle-class (and below) housing, you will have to suffer the neighbor's rumba at full blast until the wee hours.

I love Colombia, I really do, but why do so many people not use headphones and have their phones on full volume? Do they not feel guilty they're disturbing other people? Curious.

Just had the perfect bagel sandwich. Not going to give any details as to what was on it or where I got it. Because someone will get angry that I didn’t get the way they like it or from the right place. But just trust me it was perfect based on my own subjective tastes.

@Scotian82 I know the port is modernized, and I assumed the mosquitoes and gators were an exaggeration? I assume the lack of interest is related to the same issue as always.

@joe__touring Forgive me, I thought this post was about which geographies best support human life, in which case you'd look at life before modern comfort. Modern prosperity is a function of politics/govt, which is why some of the harshest climates have the richest people & vice versa.

@ColinPost Ancient cultures dont prove anything about modern quality of life standards I would love to understand why you think the poor coastal desert folks have a better quality of life than poor Andeans in modern times

From what I've seen, living conditions in Peru are MUCH more dire than 🇨🇴/🇪🇨 because 60% of its population lives in the desert and can't even grow their own food. Colombia and Ecuador are blessed with these absolutely wonderful tropical Andean climates that are infinitely more abundant in terms of biodiversity, soil quality, ambient fruit and vegetables, cow pastures, fresh water. Many of the 'poor' campesinos in those countries live extremely dignified, natural lifestyles. They don't really have to participate in the economy because they live in natural abundance...... Compare to the Peruanos who live in the desert, and often have to rely entirely on the cheapest or most processed foods in order to survive In general, I've found that poverty data paints a very incomplete picture of these kinds of things

Poverty in South America has worsened over the last decade.
