@CollAlfeiran

We are just a bunch of monkeys, trying to figure shit out, getting it wrong for the most part. So just enjoy the ride.

@uzalu_ I would want to push blue. I don't know if I would be able to. People who say "blue" so willy-nilly don't realize that in life-or-death situations, the brain runs on autopilot trying to survive.

what if 10% of the population were randomly assigned to blue, as if they had pressed the blue button? Would you try to save them by also pressing blue? what if those 10% didn't even know they had been assigned to blue? It could be you.

@_D_dot_ Fair point. We don't know what we would actually do in that situation. But the hypothetical asked "what WOULD you do?", not "What SHOULD you do?" If we are allowed to change it, then I'd say that only intelligent adults are given the buttons.

@CollAlfeiran some red voters may be lying when they say they’d sacrifice their own loved ones. At the end of the day any speculation about people lying isn’t relavent to the hypothetical or its results. If nothing else this test should show you how many people have the intent to press blue

“We don’t live in a high trust society” >test society >high trust wins >test again >trust wins >test again >trust wins “Well obviously they’re all lying”
Rock Solid@ShitpostRock2

High trust society is when you put your life on the line and hope that some stranger 10,000km away chooses the same illogical retarded option as you The entire point is that most societies are NOT high trust and will vote for their own interest. Don't trust them with your life

@astraiaintel I'm not in favor of the concentration of power in general. I don't like big corporations, big countries, or big religious organizations, because all of those things are made out of humans, and power corrupts us. I chose coordination and cooperation over subordination.

@Sktnmr @FakeRealWriter @LordTankArt For those who are not familiar with what happened: The polls showed that Hillary Clinton would win the election by a landslide, but in the end, Trump won, making it clear that what people say and what people do are not the same.

@Sktnmr @FakeRealWriter @LordTankArt Remember what happened in the 2016 American Elections? Once Trump won, many people admitted that they had lied in the polls because they didn't want the backlash. A lot of people in that 58% are lying. Clearly not you. But a lot.

@Piccini My journey: 1. It's one of those trolley problems thingies, right? Blue. 2. Oh, wait, red. No one needs to die. Red 3. The children? Oh, c'mon. Fine. Blue. 4. Wait, the question is not "what SHOULD I press?", but "what WOULD I press?". Honestly, I would panic. Red.

The current discourse on Red vs Blue buttons is a fascinating case on tribalism. Once someone has chosen a tribe, any arguments from the other side are stupid or dishonest. Our tribe is good, they must be evil!

@JoshStrifeHayes I would give blood. (I don't ACTUALLY give blood. The whole thing give me the hippity-geeves, with the needles.) Where's the poll where I can mark the correct answer?

Every Pro-red argument: (1) Cynicism: "It's impossible for blue to win. Don't be suicidal." (2) Narcissism: "There is no downside to pressing red." (3) Changing the hypo: "Babies don't count. That'd be stupid! So there's a blender..." (4) Psychopathy: "Blue pressers deserve to die." (5) General poor analytic reasoning: "If everyone just pressed red!"

@Jimboja62 @cobaco123 @theramblingfool @SamJSchoenberg There is no information onthe original post about how much time you have. Now that I think of it, no one dies, no matter what button you press because people who are in a coma will never press any button, so the evil alien robot wizard killer would wait forever.

@Jimboja62 @cobaco123 @theramblingfool @SamJSchoenberg We're used to see shooters in media, so we can predict that we would act out of fear in a situation like that. But watch "Thirteen Days", a movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis. Basically a guy (Kennedy) deciding which button to press. The stress is overwhelming. No gun.

@Jimboja62 @cobaco123 @theramblingfool @SamJSchoenberg I think you are underestimating the how traumatic it would be to be kidnaped, taken to what I can only describe as a city packed with skyscrappers containing 8 billion rooms. Being shoved in a room with two buttons and being told that someone has the power to kill all humanity.

@Spleenface Yeah but also nobody’s life was actually on the line. If it was you’d get very different results. You wouldn’t even need the majority of people to stop paying taxes to stop the military industrial complex. Just enough to overwhelm the system and people won’t even do that.

Just about everything we know about human psychology would lead us to believe that blue loses every single time. Not a poll with zero stakes, but actual life on the line, fight or flight instincts kicking in, you are not finding 4 billion people who will put the collective good ahead of their own self-preservation. Some people, sure. Some are just dumb, some are idealistic, but most will rationally look at the options and pick the one that ensures their safety.
