"Justice in education isn’t realized through uniformity; it’s realized by ensuring that every single child has the best shot at reaching his or her highest potential."

My new essay in the @APSAEdPolitics section newsletter. An intentionally trolly title, but also a plea for ed governance researchers to critically reexamine their foundational assumptions.

@teachthemx3 I attended a 2 week long professional development the summer of 2024 where paid professional consultants told the room that K-5th did not need to learn math facts "because they can use calculators." I teach 10th grade science & I very strongly disagree - I was told to be quiet.

So many smart people keep citing like it’s Gospel, a methodologically flawed 40+ year-old study whose results were never replicated.

Science of Learning in the Wild
“Ditch That Textbook” style instruction became symbolic of a much larger problem in education: the belief that learning must constantly be redesigned to match a false caricature of the world students supposedly live in and an assumption they want their education to look like that too: nonstop entertainment, stimulation, and interaction. 1/3

Teachers: Should high-demand positions like math, science, and special education receive higher pay because they’re harder to fill? Or should all teachers stay on the same pay scale regardless of subject?

At least a quarter of K–3 teachers aren’t fully committed to the science of reading. In disadvantaged schools, it’s at least a third. That gap matters. fordhaminstitute.org/national/resea…
