Martha Karua once survived a serious plane crash in Kenya in 2003. It is one of the most dramatic survival stories involving Kenyan leaders. A group of politicians had travelled from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Busia for a homecoming celebration of Moody Awori, who had just been appointed a minister. After the celebration, they boarded a 24-seat Gulfstream aircraft to fly back and continue other political events. Some people on the plane included,Raphael Tuju, Ahmed Mohamed Khalif & Martha Koome. Shortly after the plane took off from Busia airstrip, something went wrong.The aircraft failed to gain enough altitude.It hit an electric power pole. The plane then crashed into a nearby house. The crash killed,Labour Minister Ahmed Mohamed Khalif and the two pilots. When the plane crashed,She was rescued quickly by locals (Good Samaritans).They rushed her to Tabaka Mission Hospital for emergency treatment.She was later airlifted to Nairobi Hospital for specialized care. For some time, people even thought she had died, because rescuers had taken her away before officials counted the victims. Both Martha Karua and Martha Koome survived the same crash, and today Koome later became Kenya’s Chief Justice.
