@AverageSizeAndy Less waste and no bones... but they're basically chicken nuggets then.
English

@sylevus @billybinion He specifically said it should be means tested, not age based, and that would directly benefit those who didn't save because of some (irrational, but I digress) trust in the social safety net. Rewarding irresponsibility I say but, that issue was clearly addressed.
English

The most "fortunate" is not a blanket description. Definitely plenty who did not save because they thought the social safety net was going to provide for them.
I was just pointing out that growing up I knew the frustration that points at the 39 trillion and growing. Did not anticipate that, plus the obligation to keep social promises limping because that money was never kept solely for administering social services. Essentially, the people you are complaining about DID pay their taxes, the politicians spent it and borrowed more.
So we have a huge spending problem. A huge corruption problem being exposed. And unfair targets being placed on people before the system is fixed.
English

Terrible take. We’ve already constructed a system where younger, poorer people subsidize the lifestyles and asset appreciation of wealthier Boomers. We do not need to deepen that imbalance.
Nancy Mace@NancyMace
Our seniors should not pay property taxes.
English

@ashleyschendel Technically they did get "richer" as a house is an asset of sorts (an illiquid one), so that's not a great argument. Opposing taxes on unrealized gains is a better argument. But, what to replace that with is another concern. That could be better or much worse, depending.
English

Seniors should not be priced out of a house they already paid for because the area around them got more expensive.
They didn’t suddenly get richer because Zillow says the house is worth more. Most of them are living on fixed income, paying higher insurance, higher utilities, higher groceries, and then the tax bill shows up like they somehow got a raise.
People can argue all day about how to fund schools and services, and that part does matter. But making older homeowners keep rebuying the same house every year through property taxes is exactly why so many people feel like ownership is never really ownership.
English

Why are we continually finding more ways to subsidize the wealthiest generation in our country’s history?
38% of all federal spending is for seniors.
Of mandatory spending it is over half. And of age-assignable spending it is 62%.
For a group that is 18% of the total population with more home equity, more stock holdings, and more savings.
So the obvious answer is… exempt them from property taxes too, creating yet another reverse wealth transfer to be borne by the younger and poorer.

Jason,@jasonc_nc
Has never been a better time in American history to be an older person. Amazing reverse value capture that continually increases.
English

@jasonc_nc Either everyone should have to pay property taxes or nobody should, exempting the (on average) wealthiest cohort is a horrible policy. That is the definition of the poor subsidizing the wealthy, and said poor have higher expenses outside of said taxes (again, on average!)
English

@jasonc_nc Easy: they vote, younger generations vote in far fewer numbers proportionally, and are smaller generations to begin with (granted Boomers are dying off but, still.) It's horrible policy but good politics.

44% of US homeowners are older than 60
She is effectively asking you to put 100% of the local county services tax burden on 56% of the people—people who are also still in the workforce paying income taxes, mortgages, and daycare tuition
This is horrible policy

Our seniors should not pay property taxes.
English

@chiefschicktx A. It's not my data and B. I acknowledged that some older people are indeed poor (that's the problem with averages, nobody is "average"). But arguing that the oldest people aren't more likely to have more assets is absurd. The longer you live, the more assets you acquire.
English

@Colovion I'm not advocating for anyone to be exmpt from property taxes. I'm telling you your data is misleading the way you presented it.
English

This is what I mean. I know specific olds are not wealthy but many of them are VERY wealthy and arguing they should get tax breaks while the much poorer younger workers with much higher expenses (kids, commutes, etc!) should pay for them is not great policy.
Russ Greene@GreenPlusAnE
Yes, they should.
English

@chiefschicktx The entire point is that the argument to exempt younger people from property taxes is just as good, if not much better, than exempting the old from them, based on any rational view of their economic situations. Thus saying only Boomers should get it is bad policy.
English

@Colovion IDK what you're on about nor do I care that much but showing how much wealth boomers hold while leaving out how many hold it is misleading
Stirring up angst for the average boomer over a relative few is not a thing I will get on board with.
English

@WillieDJenkins1 True, but a hell of a lot of the maintenance on a gas car is due to the 2000 parts the drivetrain has, any one of which can be a problem. An EV drivetrain has 20 parts. Could be a problem but far less likely to be. EV maintenance costs are a small fraction of what gas cars are.
English

@Colovion Your entire under car (suspension steering and brakes) it's the same as every modern car on the road. And also has to deal with a whole lot of weight and isn't really designed extra beefy. Sans engine and transmission, you got the same maintenance costs. It is not maintenance free
English

I have a better solution: never change your oil ever again. Buy a Tesla. See also the million other small issues that add up to a HUGE HEADACHE that just, disappear never to be on your mind again if you drive a Tesla. Yes, really. I'm literally healthier and more sane!
RON COULTER@RONCOULTER
BULLSHIT. Change your oil every 3-5k regardless of what the owner's manual tells you, especially if you have direct injection (GDI) and/or a turbo. Oil is cheap compared to engine replacement.
English

@greatgenesjeane I've sort of been on a date like this, lol! Life is weird.
English

@chiefschicktx That's fine, but why should they get a tax break but not those who are poor and raising families (and thus have higher expenses)? I say all get it or none get it. No special treatment for Boomers just because they're Boomers.
English

@Colovion I don't care who you have sympathy for. The reality is there are about as many boomers in the lower class as upper middle and above.
English

@chiefschicktx Well A. that's their own fault (they had every opportunity to invest for their own retirements, but utterly failed to do so, not much sympathy for them, they made their beds) but B. now do younger generations (the ones you want subsidizing the irresponsible Boomers.)
English

@Colovion 30 ish% of boomers are upper middle class or above. You could say many but many MORE are not.
English

@2fluffy2furious That's not weird! I mean it's something I've had before and all that.
English

@BreadedNeds Other EVs are the same in this regard, mostly (the Bolt still has a lot of stuff under the hood which is weird, but whatever!)
English

@Colovion Can I buy any EV or does it only work with a tesla
