Africa uniting was never supposed to mean that everyone migrates to one country. The bigger vision is one African market where African countries produce for, trade with and invest in each other before looking outside the continent. Today, Africa exports raw minerals and imports finished products. We consume far too many non-African goods while exporting the very resources that create wealth elsewhere. Yet Africa is the world’s largest continent by land area, has the youngest population, and holds over 30% of the world’s natural resources, including around 90% of platinum and cobalt reserves, 46% of diamonds, and vast deposits of gold, uranium and oil. The migration issue has largely arisen because capital, investment and multinational businesses are heavily concentrated in South Africa, making it the region’s industrial and financial hub. Where investment goes, jobs follow. It is therefore not surprising that many Africans move there in search of better economic opportunities. The long-term solution is not to stop African integration it is to encourage more investment, industries and job creation across the rest of the continent so opportunities are more evenly distributed. Economic unity means reducing dependence on global superpowers, strengthening African industries, creating African jobs and keeping more value within the continent. That is the vision behind the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) not unrestricted migration, but the creation of a single continental market for goods, services and investment. If implemented effectively, it has the potential to become one of the greatest economic transformations in Africa’s history.

And to those who keep saying, "Africa must unite" or "Open the borders," explain what that actually means. How does that benefit South Africans? What's the plan? How do we build Africa if everyone is expected to move to the same country?
