It's the time of year where I ask people to nominate their favourite Irish bookshop. I'm drowning in grief, but I think a thread showing the spaces that make us feel safe and happy will be a lovely lift. Who's with me? Which Irish bookshop makes your heart sing? (Image: Banevici)

Before Stephen's Green and the Horseshoe Bar in the Shelbourne, in a Dublin of wig, sword and hoop, there was a pleasure ground on Marlborough Green, to the east of Sackville (now O'Connell) Street, attended by those 'fresh from the Four Courts' forensic array'. The below poem by TP Stuart (click on image for full version) references four eminent judges of the Court of King's Bench in Ireland - John Scott, Lord Clonmel, John Bennett, Samuel Bradstreet and William Henn - as enjoying a night out there during their judicial tenure. Not strictly accurate, as this was the Court of King's Bench of the 1780s, by which time Marlborough Green had been deserted for over 20 years. But almost certainly previous members of the Irish Bench were regulars during its heyday! More here: ruthcannon.com
