Groups.... disturbing the peace at Crystal parks, from Crystal PD. Message to Juvenile Parents and the Crystal Community about Becker Park - Over the last three days, the Crystal Police Department has responded to large disturbances in the late afternoon hours at Becker Park each day. These disturbances have involved groups of between 75-150 unsupervised juveniles arriving at the park, mostly by ride-share services from outside the city. All three days, these groups quickly became disorderly and dangerous to each other and the families enjoying the park. Numerous fights broke out, juveniles were dangerously using Orbeez guns (many which looked like real firearms), pepper spray was used, and at least one taser-type device was located. Officers quickly determined these groups were unmanageable and creating an unsafe situation for all at the park. For everyone’s safety and to avoid further escalation, the decision was made to clear the park of these groups. In addition because of the sheer magnitude of the group on Sunday, March 29th, the decision was made to close the park for everyone’s safety. As the groups were dispersed from the park with the assistance of additional officers that were called in and help from other local agencies, many of juveniles entered the business area around the shopping centers. Each day, officers spent the next few hours further dispersing and dissipating these groups from businesses as they gathered. Numerous juvenile arrests were made over these three days for charges including Disorderly Conduct, Trespassing, and Theft and additional juveniles were trespassed from the park for two years. We will also be working with other city staff on additional strategies for addressing this issue. To be clear – The Crystal Police Department will NOT tolerate these activities to occur at this family-oriented park and will be taking proactive steps moving forward to stop any of these types of gatherings at the park prior to them starting. Among these steps include extra dedicated patrols occurring within the park, large groups of juveniles arriving at the park by ride-share being turned away prior to exiting their vehicles or sent from the park upon their arrival, officers taking enforcement action up to and including arrest for all illegal activities, and trespassing those exhibiting disorderly behavior in the park after they’ve been identified. In addition, we will take enforcement actions against parents or other adults who allow juvenile participation in these activities. We would appreciate the community sharing this message with parents of juveniles so there is a broad understanding of what’s happening at the park and their responsibility for knowing where their young person is and what they’re doing. Since the city reimagined and reinvested in Becker Park five years ago, it has become a wonderful regional destination park for countless kids and families to enjoy. The city and the Police Department are very committed to taking the necessary steps to ensuring the park remains a welcoming and safe place for those kids and families. We appreciate the support and understanding of our community as we continue to focus on this goal.
