The antibiotic they are dishing out foe the Meningitis B scaremongering is......Ciprofloxacin. The most evil, life destroying antibiotic class known to man. Dont believe me? Look up being "floxxed" or "flox injuries" with Fluroquinolones.

@tracey58094002 I am not talking about treatment for meningitis. These are being dished out as prophylaxis, not just to people who were close contact. Sorry for your loss.

@ConceptJenius My mum died of Meningitis B if they had got treatment into her quicker she’d still be here. This isn’t like a flu that you can just wait it out it’s a killer. Misinformation is dangerous.

Have the 30,000 (!) healthy people given antibiotics in South East England really given informed consent?

@Roseann59830527 And? Iatrogenic harm caused by medicine kills around the same amount of people as dementia. Just because it's been around a while does not mean it is safe.

Why on earth do you want to know what I charge, that has nothing to do with you, unless you need help. And I am not NMC registered as dont live or practice in the UK anymore. I am though registered in the country I live in as both a Nurse and a Integrative Health Practitioner.

@ConceptJenius How much do you charge for your healing services? Are you still registered with the nmc!? I assume now you work in the private sector!?

The anti vax and anti science movement tremendously scares me. How do we as health professionals address this level of mistrust and misinformation … the comment section is wild

@howardbakescake I didn't need that antibiotic, it was prescribed by a locum for simple UTI. Since I understand what was the underlying cause and sorted that issue, I no longer have UTI's. But I have a lifetime of damage.

@ConceptJenius Ok. I am sorry that happened to you. But again at the time there would have been an assessment of why you needed that antibiotic.

@howardbakescake Because I have worked in healthcare over 30 years and see medical harm in my work every single day. I have also been a victim of medical negligence. Keep your eyes closed Becky.

@ConceptJenius Equally the risks and benefits are considered. There is a reason in this case it is being used over other antibiotics and would have been risk assessed for each child. Why don’t you trust doctors!?

I worked in critical care for 15 years Becky. You are arguing with the wrong person. I was also injured by your "safe" antibiotic. You should think about the harm that goes unnoticed in your patients. We blame it on the illness and progression of disease, and the finger never or rarely gets pointed at the meds used.

@ConceptJenius Well as an ANP in critical care, what you do think my answer might be? Yes…. But again same logic as before. Nothing is 💯 but Covid vaccines are safe.

@ConceptJenius No drug is without risk. All medication carries risk. A risk–benefit assessment would be performed. Risk/benefit how much a treatment helps you vs the chance and seriousness of side effects or harm. The chances aren’t zero but low.

@ConceptJenius Ciprofloxacin is safe because its benefits outweigh its risks when used correctly. It targets and kills harmful bacteria. It has a well-understood dosage range that doctors tailor to the patient. Its side effects and risks are known, monitored, and generally uncommon.

@howardbakescake What do you base your conclusion it is "safe" on? I am curious to know. What is your definition of safe?

@ConceptJenius Ciprofloxacin is used for meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis because a single oral dose is highly effective at eradicating meningitides bacteria from the nose and throat, preventing spread to close contact. One dose is highly effective. Others require multiple doses. It is safe

@HolisticHomeRN Sorry you have had this experience too. The thing about medical harm is often put down to the progression or cause of the illness, rarely the treatment. I hope that will change.

@RPinthehousenow They are giving 6000 doses to people who may have been in the same vicinity, not even for those who had known direct contact. All medicines have risk, as you can see from this thread Cipro injury is not rare and hugely under reported.

The alternatives are more harmful. -Rifampin (2 days, multiple doses) -Ceftriaxone (IM single dose) - Azithromycin (less commonly used; resistance concerns) One dose of cipro for prophylaxis is least toxic of the options. People exposed should not hesitate to take prophylaxis. Meningitis is nothing to “wait and watch” for.

To clarify for the bots, I am not suggesting that nobody takes antibiotics, as prophylaxis or to treat confirmed infection. That is a medical decision. I am making a point there are other antibiotics that could be given, yet they have chosen Cipro. And Cipro harms. Read the comments, its not "rare".

@ConceptJenius Not surprised. Currently in the waiting room - for pain mgmt doc appt. Neuropathy & body wide joint pain became 24/7 part of life in 2013, never stopped. Chronic ligament/tendon tears too. Fluoroquinolones are essentially chemotherapeutic agents, re-patented as antibiotics.

@guttersnipechum Both are fluoroquinolone antibiotics. However, ear drops (both Ofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin) have minimal systemic absorption compared to oral Ciprofloxacin tablets, meaning they carry a much lower risk of full-body side effects.
