SK Hynix Moves Preemptively to Address Rising Demand for Next-Generation 1c DRAM
SK Hynix is reportedly considering shifting the DRAM investment strategy at its new memory fab "M15X" in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, from 1b (5th-generation 10nm-class) to 1c (6th-generation 10nm-class) DRAM. The move is seen as a preemptive response to rapidly shifting conditions in both the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and commodity DRAM markets.
According to industry sources on the 4th, SK Hynix is in discussions to expand 1c DRAM capex at M15X beyond its original plan.
M15X is SK Hynix's new memory fabrication site, occupying roughly 60,000 square meters, with total achievable DRAM capacity estimated at around 90,000 wafers per month.
The company had initially planned to concentrate 1b DRAM investment at M15X. The 1b node serves as the core die for SK Hynix's HBM3E and HBM4 products. HBM4 in particular is set for full commercialization this year and will debut on NVIDIA's latest AI accelerator series, "Vera Rubin."
Accordingly, SK Hynix has been deploying 1b DRAM equipment investment of about 30,000 wafers per month at M15X since 4Q last year. The original plan was to expand 1b DRAM capacity to roughly 80,000 wafers through further investment, while introducing a small-scale 1c DRAM line in the remaining available space.
However, SK Hynix is now reportedly moving to place its M15X equipment orders for the second half of this year as 1c DRAM.
A semiconductor industry source said, "SK Hynix had originally intended to bring in only 1b DRAM equipment at M15X this year for the sake of investment efficiency, but it has recently been pivoting toward 1c DRAM. The understanding is that the investment strategy was revised in response to rapidly shifting market conditions."
The principal driver behind the strategic shift is HBM4. SK Hynix had planned HBM4 shipments of around 6 billion Gb to NVIDIA this year.
However, with Vera Rubin shipments now expected to decline due to optimization issues, SK Hynix's HBM4 shipment target has reportedly been cut by 20–30% from earlier projections. As a result, the rationale for expanding 1b DRAM capacity has weakened.
In contrast, 1c DRAM, as the most advanced DRAM generation, is expected to see substantial demand growth going forward. SK Hynix plans to apply 1c DRAM not only to its next-generation HBM, HBM4E, but also to SOCAMM2, which has been gaining traction in the server market. SOCAMM is a next-generation memory module being developed by NVIDIA as a proprietary standard.
Taking these factors into account, SK Hynix is expected to deploy at least 40,000 wafers' worth of 1c DRAM capex at M15X.
Another industry source commented, "SK Hynix appears to be moving quickly on M15X equipment orders. A formal investment plan has not yet been disclosed, but the leading scenario being discussed is that the additional investment will be focused on 1c DRAM."

Some interesting Korean names I’ve been looking into:
1) APR Corporation - imo the only cosmetics name globally worth owning. Insane socials ground game and huge ramp coming from offline penetration in US + SKU expansion beyond their very successful Medicube product. You’ll say its run up a lot, I’m confident its going higher. Excellent management.
2) Park Systems - Metrology leader, solid pure play on AFM.
3) Wonik IPS - ALD/CVD/PECVD for memory. Key equipment makers for Samsung foundry.
4) ISC Co - kind of like Korean Teradyne. Margins expanding as early system level test socket market basically a duopoly between ISC and Winway. Still cheap.
5) Mico Ltd - kind of like Korean Element Solutions. Precision cleaning + ceramic chamber components.
6) Hyundai Rotem - TANKS.
