@ryanvisconti @lukedsimmons Terrible take by both Ryan and Luke. Take some time to read Voddie and keep your children in the service. Youth ministry/“children’s church” has allowed parents to put someone else in charge of discipling their children… it’s proved itself to clearly not be what’s best for them.
English

100% correct, Luke. Pastors get this because we want what’s best for the parents and kids. This kind of view gets backlash from moms who struggle with separation anxiety and want to be affirmed in whatever makes them feel most comfortable. I feel sympathy for parents dropping off kids for the first time at a new church, but young kids in an adult worship gathering is TOTALLY distracting for all involved. I’ve experienced it from the pulpit and from the congregation.
English

@Ligonier What a horrible take. Know the times, women aren’t idolizing marriage… most hate the idea of it. I would expect better from Ligonier.
English

@BenScottStevens @butchworley I really hope you don’t believe the earth is 4.543 billion years old.
English

@atplack @sola_chad Even with your false definition, your argument still fails. It would still be Peter saying that they distort Paul’s writings just like they do the “left behind scripture”. The only way this claim makes sense is if Peter is equating Paul’s writings with scripture.
English

Yes, λοιπὰς γραφάς does mean what I said. You clearly don't know ancient Greek. So lying about it or gaslighting someone who does know won't work.
Your version only makes sense if you attempt to exegete from English.
Ignorant (you) and unstable (those outside the pillar and foundation of truth) people distort Pseudepigrapha to your own destruction.
Good luck with that.
English

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”

@sola_chad Why didn't Jesus or the apostles teach Calvinism?
English

@atplack @sola_chad That’s not what λοιπὰς γραφάς means. Peter’s point falls apart if Paul’s writings are outside of scripture. Peter is saying that they twist Paul’s letters just as they do “the rest of scripture”. This passage only makes sense if Paul’s writings were considered scripture!
English

Interesting, so you think that 2 Peter 2:16 refers to Paul's writings as scripture. I would say these verses are exactly talking about you, because you distort the true meaning of scripture to prove a point.
λοιπὰς γραφὰς is "left behind 'scripture'". The writings of Herodotus, Aristophanes, and Xenophon stand witness to the fact that λοιπὰς means things that could be considered a species but exist outside the genus.
In fact, Peter was not declaring what scripture is, but that Paul's writings are outside the genus of scripture (at that time).
Do you often use the Pseudepigrapha for doctrine because you are ignorant and unstable?
English

@atplack @sola_chad You made the claim that all references to scripture are to the OT. I’m simply showing the Peter referred to Paul’s writings as scripture, proving your point to be incorrect.
English

@CorbinGuthman @sola_chad Wow, you really don't understand basic exegesis.
What in God's creation does your verse have to do with false teaching based on English commentary/translation?
Or can you not read what I wrote? It is only one of the two.
English

@jeru_complete @sola_chad Your analogy adds a time delay that the passage does not teach. The only way for it to kind of work is that the moment you get in the vehicle, you’re already at the destination. Colossians 2:12 says we are raised with Christ through faith, not after.
English

@CorbinGuthman @sola_chad It's not the cause - it's the vehicle, as I've said three times and which you've ignored.
I've already shown you the problem with your belief, that you think you arrive at the destination at the same time as getting in the vehicle, but you keep repeating the lie.
Goodbye.
English

@jeru_complete @sola_chad Colossians 2:12 doesn’t make faith the cause of regeneration. Scripture elsewhere is clear that faith itself is granted (Phil. 1:29) and that we are born not of human will (John 1:13).
So the issue isn’t whether we must repent and believe but rather where those acts come from.
English

Our repentance is pleasing to God because we do it unto faith. Stop lying about Scripture.
Also, you're the one who believes you cannot repent before regeneration, whereas I follow what Scripture actually says: that you must repent unto faith (which is pleasing to God), and continue thereafter.
Ephesians 2:8-9 does not address Ordo Salutus either.
Answer the question about how faith is the vehicle for regeneration (Colossians 2:12) but that you keep insisting you need to arrive at the destination before or at the same time as getting in the vehicle.
If you're not going to engage with any honesty, I'm just going to end it here.
English

@jeru_complete @sola_chad You’re assuming fallen man has the ability to produce repentance and faith prior to new birth, which Scripture does not teach.
Ephesians 2, Romans 8, and 1 Corinthians 2. Dead men do not repent unto life unless God grants it to them.
English

@jeru_complete @sola_chad If they didn’t have faith then their works would not have pleased God and they wouldn’t be in the hall of faith! If you repent before faith as a separate act then you’re not actually repenting because repentance is pleasing to God!
Already did, we’re saved by grace through faith
English

@CorbinGuthman @sola_chad No, you've completely ignored every point I've made about one verse.
You keep trying to divert and jump around first.
Hebrews 11:6 is about the hall of faith, mirroring James 2 about Abraham and Rahab, and not about soteriology or the ordo salutus.
Now actually answer 2:12.
English

@jeru_complete @sola_chad So we’re not saved by grace through faith?
English

@jeru_complete @sola_chad How does Hebrews 11:6 align with your position? Only mine takes all Scripture into account, yours picks and chooses.
English

@CorbinGuthman @sola_chad Are you reading Scripture, though?
Colossians 2:12 says regeneration comes through faith - not alongside it.
You keep repeating that the vehicle arrives at the same time as the destination, and it's not only completely asinine but it also makes a mockery of Scripture.
Repent.
English

@jeru_complete @sola_chad Also, Colossians 2:12 is great! I haven’t said that we’re saved by anything other than grace through faith. This aligns perfectly with that verse.
English

@CorbinGuthman @sola_chad Again, you're ignoring Colossians 2:12.
By the way: you don't actually know what repenting is; it's the word 'metanoia', which means 'to change your mind'.
Do you actually think Jesus is saying "Change your mind and believe so you can change your mind"?
English

@ryanschatz @Eric_Conn @Brian_Sauve I read it as the gathered service. Prayer and prophesy encompasses the entire service kind of like “law and prophets” is used to encompass scripture. Therefore, the man does not cover (he’s the glory of God) and woman does cover so that God’s glory is on full display in worship.
English

The grammar doesn’t allow that reading.
In 1 Cor 11:4-5, Paul uses an identical construction for both men and women.
The participles (προσευχομένη, προφητεύουσα) are nominative feminine singular and they agree with γυνὴ (woman) and describe what she is doing. They are not dative or genitive, which would be needed to mean “while others are praying.”
The participles modify the subject: the woman herself is the one praying and prophesying.
If this reading applied to women, it would have to apply equally to men in v4 meaning men aren’t praying or prophesying either, just sitting there while others do. Nobody reads v4 that way, because the grammar doesn’t support it. You can’t apply one grammatical reading to v4 and a different one to v5 when the construction is identical.
Every major English translation renders the woman as the active subject.

Can’t @Eric_Conn and @Brian_Sauve read that Paul said clearly: “…we have NO SUCH PRACTICE, nor have the churches of God” (1Co 11:16)?
If they know, can they explain why it shames Christ if men cover while praying or prophesying since the Jews did that?
English

@ryanschatz @Eric_Conn @Brian_Sauve Something can be common without being universal. My point still stands that women were covering back then.
English

@CorbinGuthman @Eric_Conn @Brian_Sauve Greeks uncovered their heads for worship; Romans covered theirs (Keener, p444; Oster, 494). Since Corinth was a Roman colony in Greece, both customs coexisted making any claim of a single “common practice” misleading.
English

@ryanschatz @Eric_Conn @Brian_Sauve Like I said, I don’t believe chapter 11 refers to women getting up front to pray or prophesy in the church but rather it is referring to the entire service. For example, as the pastor prays, we are all praying along with him.
English

@CorbinGuthman @Eric_Conn @Brian_Sauve How can he be telling them to be silent and that women vocalizing is shameful and also talk about women praying and prophesying?
Also, after quoting from them in 1Co 14:34-35 Paul says, “What? came the word of God out from you [men]? or came it unto you [men] only? (KJV)
English

@ryanschatz @Eric_Conn @Brian_Sauve Paul tells women to remain silent in the church 3 chapters later. He’s not contradicting himself here by telling them to get on stage to pray and prophecy with a cover on. I believe prayer and prophecy here refers to the entire service.
English

@CorbinGuthman @Eric_Conn @Brian_Sauve Then why the point of saying it only during prayer and prophecy? Are you saying it was common practice only when a woman was praying out loud in the congregation but otherwise she was uncovered?
