Tonight it finally clicked for me. Neo asks her the classic question: “If you already know what I’m going to do… do I really have a choice?” And she hits him with the line: “You’ve already made the choice. You’re just here to understand why.” For years I thought this meant “there’s no free will.” But that’s not it. Here’s the real insight: Free will doesn’t exist in the moment. It exists in the identity that leads to the moment. The actions you take right now? They’re mostly automatic - shaped by your conditioning, experiences, fears, habits, and past. But the person you’re becoming? That’s where your freedom actually lives. You don’t choose the moment. You choose the man who will meet the moment. Or put in another way: Determinism writes the past. Identity writes the future. Because when your life isn’t where you want it to be, the answer isn’t “make better choices.” The answer is: become the version of yourself who makes better choices automatically. That’s the real red pill.

@adamarm47013502 @demystifysci Reliably being able to predict that something will work is not understanding it. A fish brain is making many predictions about the physics of its environment every day that are just as reliable as our equations are. But does the fish have understanding?

The reason atheists could never cohere into a subculture is because atheism, taken seriously, is right-wing, but almost all the prominent atheists are left-wing. Thus, the movement is schizophrenic. If you don’t believe in supernatural creation, then you believe that evolution by mutation and selection is the *only process* known, or even imaginable, that can construct value from non-value. We are not exempt from this: memetic and cultural evolution drive progress far more than reason. Indeed, reason is just a particularly fit metameme that evolved because it granted power to its hosts. It is not categorically special, nor is it capable of producing progress on its own. Reason can criticize but it cannot create. Evolution, taken seriously, is colder and more brutal than the most vicious human tyrant. It is alien, hideous, captivating. Cleave the emptiness in two, smash the halves into each other, then cleave the winner in two, on and on forever. I must emphasize: this is not just the only process that *has* produced progress. It is the only process that *can* produce progress in the absence of the supernatural. It follows that every transfer from the fit to the unfit which hinders the power of the giver or artificially boosts that of the receiver undoes the work of creation. The egalitarian tribe of lions where every male gets to mate and food is redistributed will be pathetically weak in a few generations compared to the tribe where the strongest male kills his rivals and has a harem. To be right-wing is to accept this process as the only real engine of truth, beauty, and power. To be left-wing is to believe in miraculous exemptions to its iron logic. PS: yes there are forms of religion and mysticism that accept this one and only Law, including some rare clear-eyed Christians. I’m not talking about those.

Epidemiological studies are supposedly the worst kind. They are simply make correlations where there are too many variables. Randomized controlled studies are the gold standard. Epidemiological (correlation) studies have too many variables and can be interpreted in any fasion. You are making an assumption that the cause is fat from the ice cream. Ignoring all the other variables like sugar, weight, metabolic syndrome and so many others. Its very easy to justify any assumption and correlation to prove your assertion. Its also hard to look in the mirror and admit you might be wrong. Especially the older one gets. I dont think your FAITH in “epidemiological studies” is on the right track. I hope your your vintage will not prevent you from ever considering you might be mistaken.

neighbor found dead of a heart attack in his store. Asked his relative "did he smoke?" "no, but he ate a lot of ice cream". No matter how I try to inform the public about the very clear, very well documented large epidemiological studies demonstrating the direct relationship between saturated fats and CHD I get the same ignorant replies. The literature is clear. The new age phonies peddling hi fat, hi meat "carnivore" diets are a threat to public health. Most of these peddlers do not know how to read epidemiological studies. There are "nutritional rogues" (The Skeptical Nutritionist, 1983, M. Weiner, Macmillan Books) but they are the EXCEPTION, not the rule. They can eat almost anything with impunity. To understand this subject you must study large populations over long periods of time.

I went to Cairo and got in a cab. Cabbie starts blowing through all the red lights and I freak out yelling, “Are you paying attention? Those are red lights, you’re gonna kill us!” Cabbie replies, “No no no no no no sir, I am professional. I get you there fast and safe.” Not a thing about this felt safe, but after a while I relax and figure this is how things are done. We come up to a green light and the cabbie stops. I start to lose my mind and yell at him again, “Do you not see the green light? Why aren’t we going through? I thought you were a pro—” when another cab flies in front of us through the intersection. Cabbie looks at me in his mirror with a smile and says, “See that? He is professional too.”

Out of all the cities I’ve been to in the world, Cairo was the worst by far. Truly an urban hell on Earth.
