The stakes for this week's Starship launch are high. The US commercial space industry is depending on lower launch costs and higher capacity. NASA’s lunar ambitions, to a great degree, hinge on its success. And the stakes are highest of all for SpaceX. arstechnica.com/space/2026/05/…

We've received about 130,000lbs of powder metal "Boomalloy" billet, to be forged into turbine discs. This is enough metal for ~1.3GW of turbines. This stuff normally takes over a year to procure—but we partnered deeply with our supplier and got it in weeks.

Astonishing find at the local rock and mineral store…a very large enhydro agate, with a clearly visible pocket of water. These occur when water is naturally trapped INSIDE as the agate forms. That water is likely millions of years old. 🤯

🧵Starship’s stainless steel looks like a fundamental flaw for deep space - heavy, “primitive” compared to lightweight composites. Yet this 123m vehicle is designed to deliver 100–150 metric tons of fully reusable payload to the Moon and Mars. The secret isn’t one trick. It’s an interlocking chain of physics solutions that turn the steel’s weight penalty into an advantage across ascent, orbit, reentry, and landing.

5 out of the 6 major Democratic candidates for California governor have major red flags for me: calmatters.org/california-vot… All but Villaraigosa. So I go to his website (antonio2026.com) to check on his stances on issues and plans, and for the most part it sounds reasonable and he seems to be focused on affordability, and I'm thinking, great, I think I've got a candidate to support. Then I go to his record of results (antonio2026.com/results) and most of his bragging points are about increased government spending. So... R it is, I guess...

I'm somewhere between pessimistic and hopeful weirdly. In 2020 when I saw some of the first Starlink launches, I certainly didn't imagine we'd have 11,000+ Starlinks on orbit already. Just like after seeing the first booster land in 2015, I certainly didn't imagine actually reusing them more than a couple times, and having it still be more of a lucky thing when they recovered and reused a booster, vs the absolute norm. So I don't know. I've seen both sides of this coin. Disappointment and changes drifting farther from the plan (Grey Dragon, dearMoon, any and all MARS timelines), but I've also been shocked by some accomplishments.

SPENCER PRATT: THE MAYOR LA NEEDS The Los Angeles mayoral race has taken a surreal turn as Spencer Pratt pivots from reality TV to a populist firebrand. During a recent debate at the Skirball Cultural Center, Pratt went “scorched earth” on incumbent Karen Bass and Nithya Raman, blaming their leadership for the 2025 wildfires that destroyed his home. Framing the current administration as a disaster for public safety, Pratt has successfully positioned himself as a wildcard challenger determined to disrupt the political elite. To bolster his campaign, Pratt released a gritty new anthem and music video titled “California Fried.” The track serves as a polarizing visual manifesto, juxtaposing L.A.’s homeless crisis with fire-ravaged neighborhoods to highlight the “unhoused reality” he claims leaders are ignoring. By blending his entertainment instincts with a hard-hitting political message, Pratt has ensured his platform remains viral and impossible to overlook. This digital-first strategy has earned high praise from tech moguls Chamath Palihapitiya and David Sacks, who are reportedly floored by Pratt’s AI-driven ad campaigns. Chamath described the high-fidelity spots as “absolutely incredible,” while Sacks noted that the cinematic, AI-generated imagery of Pratt “cleaning up” the city is exactly why he is surging in the polls. For these Silicon Valley titans, Pratt’s campaign represents a sophisticated digital revolution that is fundamentally rewriting the modern political playbook. #SpencerPratt #LosAngeles #Mayor #Trending

Stockholm, 1930. The Nobel ceremony begins. One name is missing. Meghnad Saha nominated again. Ignored again. His equation explained how stars work—how light reveals temperature, pressure, composition. Every telescope, every observatory, every astrophysics textbook relies on it. His math made it possible. He came from nothing, a poor village in Bengal. He taught himself physics while others doubted him. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize five times. Five times, the committee said no. The scientist who used his equation won prizes. The man who gave them the tools received silence. He died in 1956, still waiting. The stars he decoded shine every night. His name almost forgotten. Remember Meghnad Saha.

That is exactly what we needed. We need to see an administrator bloated system shrunk down to its elite scholarly research core, sharing the security & wealth it generates, with the American researchers who actually generated it. We got cryptic visas/secrets-for-labor programs.
