@martin_casado Only things I'd add are ARR/head to get a proxy for how opex is scaling with ARR growth (super or sub-linear) and break out variable gross selling burn from net burn (leaving net opex burn) to understand if the business is getting closer or further away from opex break even

When your CFO slacks you at 4:58pm on Friday with "hey can you model real quick what happens if we push those sales hires by two months"

There is a real risk of false positives right now because in almost every industry, every company feels pressure to buy "AI". I do think the potential is huge, but founders will find that the strength of customer signal or even early traction may be a head fake.

@BenjaminT007 @semil @ewiesen But then running the model and delivering on that revenue (and, in alot of cases, the freemium usage that is supposed to convert to revenue later) results in low or no (or even worse, negative) margins. Call it indirect capex.

@CoryMichaly @semil @ewiesen Maybe a handful of cos like this (e.g. eleven labs) but majority of business apps are a foundation model w/ some fine tuning + software

Interesting take below on some - perhaps not all - fast scaling AI business apps.
Eric Wiesen@ewiesen

@wquist @semil @jasonlk These companies remind me most of ecommerce companies. High capex, high revenue growth, high churn, low switching costs, (probably) low enterprise value.

@semil Is @ewiesen referring to AI business apps here? most AI business apps aren't high capex

Moving from monthly to annual pricing has its place 💔But it >doesn't< reduce churn It just masks it for 2-12 months 😢It doesn't make the product any better, or customers any happier It just traps them a little longer

In 2022, you could blame the markets In 2023, you could blame "macro" impacts In 2024, you could still claim we were in a "downturn" In 2025 -- you've run out of excuses

Lacking real problems, a lot of people immediately stress out about fake or minor ones. It's like there's a minimum level of stress that they require.

the reason you feel insane is because all of your "hobbies" are nothing more than glorified consumption. you won't find God in $15k a month of skis, camera gear, or coffee machines. you NEED to create something, just go BUILD, a chair, a bench, carve some wood, anything, please
