I am super excited to share that @Starcloud_ has raised a $170M Series A at a $1.1bn valuation to fuel our development of data centers in space 🚀 The round comes after the successful deployment of our first satellite, Starcould-1, a few months ago, which had the first @NVIDIA H100 on board and was the first to train an LLM in space. The funds will be used to develop our third satellite, which aims to be cost-competitive with Earth-based data centers in terms of AI inference cost. The round was led by @Benchmark and @EQT Ventures, and we are excited to welcome Benchmark GP, @Chetanp Puttagunta, to our board. We are also excited to welcome other new investors, including the world's largest infrastructure fund, @Macquarie Capital, @SevenSevenSix 7️⃣7️⃣6️⃣, Manhattan West, Adjacent, Carya, GSBackers, and Harpoon. In fact it may become the dominant and best source of startup ideas in the not too distant future.

Nah, YC isn't overrated, but yeah, lots of people fantasize about it, and the truth is YC wants that hype. But YC does give a lot of things that help with future funding rounds. VC firms invest more money in YC-funded startups. Still, I have doubts about their selection process. They say they don't focus on top schools, but almost every YC grad comes from a top school. And they're not all good I can say this because I know 5 people who just generated ideas from ChatGPT, applied, and got selected.

One of the hard parts of venture is that generally the bad news comes well before the great news. This is magnified the earlier you invest. It is also more tangible in SPVs since there’s nothing to hide behind. Your bad investments will usually fail before your good ones, hopefully, more than make up for the damage. But that timing misalignment can cause problems if not addressed upfront and proactively. Something to think about for emerging managers when setting and managing investor expectations, particularly with sidecars.
